This is a follow-up to my other TWO postings on this topic.

The doc from the Road Runner folks STRONGLY recommends disabling file and printer sharing if using a cable modem. Bummer! I understand why, but I would like to network three (and maybe someday five) PCs in my house for the express purpose of sharing files and printers, while at the same time having all use the cable to access the Internet. So I have two questions:

(1) Is there any way to SAFELY share files locally while keeping ner-do-wells out?

(2) Is it possible to set up a completely independent network in the house (using either one or two NICs in each machine)?

Thanks to all for your patience in considering all my posts about cable modems.

just get a linksys router there pretty cheap and easy to use. It gives you security. ables all computers to hook up to the internet with one ips so theres no additional charge for extra ips addresses and you can enable file sharing with it.

I thought setting up file sharing thru NetBeui instead of TCP/IP was safe, or much safer. There'll be some experts along shortly to help, but that's how I was told to do it, with minimum risk of exposing files. I also run my net thru a Ugate router.

Nothing is 100% safe! The use of a router with NAT is probably best, NETBEUI for your internal LAN helps also. as does software type firewalls. I've just been using the router alone for several months and so far have been lucky. But sooner or later, someone that wants in badly enough will find a way!

Instead of posting new "follow-up" threads, use the Post Reply in the same thread. This will allow everyone to easily follow the related topic without things being scattered all over the board.

Thanks!
