But this is beyond a joke.

I'm using WindowsXP.

After my brother tells me (once again) he can't copy files to my PC over the network, I swear, and proceed checking my shares.

I hit properties on my incoming folder.
"Hmm. Read only."
*un-checks read only, applys, all files and subfolders*
*sends a message via MSN to his brother "Try now"*
*recieves reply: "Nope."*
"Hmm..."
*hits properties on his incomig folder*
"... Read only."
*un-checks read only, applys, all files and subfolders*
*hits properties on his incomig folder*
"Still read only? What the..."
*un-checks read only, applys, This folder only*
*hits properties on his incomig folder*
"Hmm. Right. read only."
*re-shares all his folders, makes a new share folder*
*hits properties on each of the folders*
"Read %$^*@ only."

After re-setting the network, making a new office network, I soon discover 'every' folder on my hadr drive is read only, and I cannot for the life of me remove the read only flag.

The moment I hit okay after applying the change (or not applying, hitting okay, and the choosing apply), it's still read only right after I open properties again.
I've tried rebooting after hitting apply, and just rebooting all together (I'm not dense, but somone was bound to ask me if I had anyway), and cold booting a few times.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why I have jsut been locked off my own hard drive? I *DO* have administrative permissions, (I am the administrator).

Thanks.

Go to administrative tools in program files and check admin rights, might have set a policy by accident.

Yeah, I checked there. I couldn't find anything along the lines of
Allow write Permissions Enabled/Disabled
or anything.

I tried a system restore, but the restore point I mdae when I had just installed Windows XP, has been conveniently removed. So I could only go back one day, which didn't seem to help.

I think you may have to give your brother's account full rights to the whole drive and not just the directory, for both the Security and Sharing tabs. Try as much of that as you can and see.

Yep.. sounds slightly similar to my thread...

Why does XP appear to have alot of problems commiting changes. Maybe to commit an option within XP, you need to have installed SP1 previously, and took the option for the "paid" tech-support from MS. And then - and only then, they will then sell you yet another Service Pack, which will simply allow XP to save the settings.

Final note... refering back to my thread...
Messenger is running again... surprise, surprise.

My brother doesn't really hav ean account, he connects as a Guest, and the default guest account has write permissions. As does the administrator account.
Windows just seems to have it's own ideas.
