Hi everybody!
I have a system that is dedicated to graphic design. It is a PII 266 with 192 MB PC66 SDRAM, PCI GeForce 2 MX and 10GB hdd. I want to upgrade the cpu with something abit faster since I have an extra BF6 laying around. I was wondering if upgrading to a Celeron 566 and overclocking it to 850 would give me the results I expect. Will the loss of cache hut at all for heavy Photoshop work? Or will the cache drop make the upgrade more of a lateral move?
The reason I ask is b/c my graphics orinted friend says that the Celeron is a piece of junk. i havbe had aseveral and love them but have never done heavy duty graphics manipulations on them. Is he right?
Thanks
Dave
Yes, Celeron is **** when it comes to Photoshop from my personal experience.... And yes, cache plays a very big role when it comes to graphic applications such as Photoshop.....
But to decide if this upgrade to Celeron 566 @ 850Mhz will be a lateral move, I think we need to know what processor we're comparing to with the Celeron 566Mhz.

So you would rather have a PII 266 than a Cel 566? Wow, I am surprised. I guess gaming is VERY different than Photoshop work. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Thanks.
dave
Definetly NOT! I would say that the Celeron 566 @ 850Mhz will outperform the P2 266 any day! Cache memory plays a big role in graphic applications, but even a Celeron 566 not overclocked would outperform a P2 266.

Thanks http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Sorry I should have listed the specs instead of putting htem in the paragraph. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
I have to go Celeron b/c I do not want to replace the PC66 ram in the system. Thanks. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif My friend was saying that the cahce plays such a role that the 566 Celeron would not be faster than the 266 PII. I know the Cel 566 is a great cpu and I loved the benchmarks i got from mine, but I did not know about Photoshop performance.
Thanks
Dave
A Celeron 566 without being overclocked will outperform a P2 266 by quite a margin. Tell your friend to test it for himself if he has the resource to do so.... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

If you are thinking of keeping that PC66 SDRAM, I really suggest you don't, since you said you were going to overclock your cpu, which would have a 100MHz FSB.. and the PC66 would not likely work on the new FSB, even if it does I don't think the stability is going to be great. The Celeron 566 should easily outperform the P2 266! With the large cache of the 266, that is running half-speed, and with the 566 running 128k at full-speed, the half-cached processor would be a bit faster AT THE SAME CLOCK SPEED.. but with the Celeron which is 300MHz faster.. I think your friend is a wrong!

Dave,I would say that for you,the best bet would be to get a pIII(non coppermine) 500 or 600 and go from there......cache size is even more important then cache speed with photoshop.

Graphics are resource hogs of course. With a last generation system everything just takes longer.
There are some awfully good deals out there to build a new system from scratch right now.
With ram prices dropping like a stone, I went from 160mb to 256mb and was truly surprised how my graphics performance improved!
