hi,
Well I thought I would venture into the world of Linux and am I having a few problems. I am running Mandrake 8.2( dual boot with XP pro)
Really this is a stupid problem but since I have never used Linux I am a bit lost. I am strugging to set up my interent connection( lol dont laugh)
I try to use the connection wizard and it says put in downlaod disk 1, so I do but it then says it cant read isoxxxxxxx.
Linux installed fine the burns arent bad. is there anyother way I can set up my Connection without using the disk. Also neither of my cd-drives can read the downloaded linux disks( windows can)
Many more problems to come. :D
Thanks

Ok so you are in the mandrake control center?
If your not click on the control center button on the desktop, then click on the hardware button, the click on hardware list, then click on networking and then click on the card that linux thinks you have. Now click on run configuration tool. It should come up with a list of many different network cards. Just click on the one that is your and it should work.
If you are still getting the same message you might need to reinstall linux, and when it asked you if you want to install some software packages(Multimedia, games, internet, etc...) Just click on the one that is related to networking and the internet. Then it should install all of the drivers for you onto your hard drive.:t
Hope this helps.
I am doing the same, a dual boot with windows XP and Mandrake 8.2.:r

Ok Thanks I will try that.
Hopefully it is a nice easy fix except I have run into a few other problems.
I have no sound:( lol Is it just a matter of not having the right sound card drivers installed (turtle beach santa cruz)
Thanks again. :t

For scrolling a PS2 wheel mouse, edit /etc/X11/xf86config here:
Section "InputDevice"
# Identifier and driver
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "imps/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "resolution" "1600"
lower 1600 if that's too fast.

I just reformatted and reinstalled linux because I found out that I didn't activate my mouse wheel during the install. Now it works and so does some other stuff because I install linux right this time:rolleyes:
Gib here (http://www.hz3n.com/seti/guides/setilinux/setilinuxintro.htm) is a great site that gives you the linux seti and it tells you how to install it.:t
If you are useing the KDE interface the camand line is where you quick luanch bar is, it looks like a black box.

You can also go to the start menu, the click on terminals, and then there are other kinds to choose from(only if you installed them during the install, if you didn't you will have to reinstall linux again and select it from the package list:( )

I might be able to help. I've had success with different flavors of linux and I've have had seti up for a while.
First of all, while reinstalls are usually not too difficult, they're rarely necessary. Unless of course you cannot log in as root. (sorry, bizkitkid :) )
gibsinep, congradulations on getting internet access! That's key!!
Linux has several consoles available at all times, usually accessable by holding some keys down and pressing f1 thru f8. Mine uses <ctrl> <alt> f2 for a basic console. <ctrl> <alt> f7 gets me back into X (the window manager.) Play around...it's hard to break it.
If you're stuck on the command line and want to run the GUI, 'startx' is your answer.

I unistalled linux mandrake and installed linux lycoris. it uses the KDE desktop so i am familier with it. Plus I can login as root:eek: :D
Is lycrosis just as good as mandrake? So far it has been less of a hassle:)

I like lycrosis better because it can read the files thats are on my windows hard drive. That way I can listen to all of my mp3s:D Also it comes with a built in dvd and divx player that works just as good as the playa.
I got seti running, I am going to try and find a linux version of MBM5 so I can see what my temps are.

http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=114418
The above link is to a thread in sysopt/distributed computing titled 'seti on linux.' We're trying to get gibsinep's system to run SETI, a distributed data-crunching tool that recieves and transmits info over the internet. His connection is OK for browsing and he can ping www.yahoo.com from the command line, but for some reason seti cannot connect and when he types ifconfig, it is an unrecognized command. He's using SuSE 8.0
Thanks for any insight, as I'd like to understand this network issue as well!

PS: We'd like to encurrage others to run seti on Linux and keep all this info in one place, so please redirect any replys to the distributed computing forum.
Thanks,

KK, are you sure you cannot read the CD under linux?
tried
ls -al /dev/cdrom
How did you install linux? Boot off from the CD?
There's a neat feature about linux, in which you can actually mount the "isoxxxxx" file and actually read, extract files from it. So the "isoxxxxxxx" can act as a file system! Neat huh?

Are you expecting a listing of xxxxx.cda when you do a /dev/cdrom ?
I don't think it work that way, I have to reconfirm it. I have not tried playing a music cd yet.

Ahh, reading files on your window hard drive is as easy as m.o.u.n.t
mount /dev/hdaX
X being the partition.
try info mount
I think the correct syntax will be
mount /dev/hda1 -ntfs
I think.

Solve the easy way
that's via reinstall.
You wouldn't want to reinstall windows if your mouse isn't working right?
Oh well, with Windows, usually reinstall is the only way. LOL

My problem is stated previous in the thread. :t

henry. As what gibsenip has already said. I have fixed the problems. The only way I could do it was to reinstall mandrake, because during the install i didn't activate the mouse(by moving the scroll wheel.
I didn't meant to say loose mouse but, lose mouse. The mouse wouldn't move at the login screen. It was just stuck in the middle of the screen.
Gibsenip First go and click on the file you download and extract the files into a folder/directory. You don't have to tar the files. Once you have done that, open up the command consol and then type in the exact path to the directory and file. You have to be loged in as the root user.
For example:
/home/root/SETI/setiathome<--- this is the name of the file you want to start.
Then it should run the program in the cammand windows. All you got to do is type in your email address that you have signed up with seti and the rest is done for ya. You will start crunching. :t

Bizkitkid2001- are your seti WU going any faster in Linux?
itismike
08-21-2002, 07:59 PM
G,
I'm responding here because this is currently a Linux issue and people in this forum may have more familiarity with it then those in distributed computing.
I understand that you now have a fresh install and no internet connection.
Since you're on a cable modem hub, does that mean you have an ethernet connection? If so, all you need to do is activate your card and enter your username and password for the ISP. My Linux distribution is different from yours, but I'm sure that the method of network activation is similar. Do you have YAST2? If so, jus navigate to network card configuration. If not, search your menu for words like system, configuration, hardware and network

I understand that you now have a fresh install and no internet connection. Hopefully the fresh install will clear up the connection problem you had before.

I can't tell because i am running the command line version. It doesn't give you a time and a percentage of what has been anylized. I can't get the graphics one working.
It sais that I need to run it with the -graphics flag. How do I run it with this flag. I have tried different commands of useing the flag name but none get me anywhere.

for the Graphic one
you need to be loading XFree86 manager
aka Windows in linux, at the very least.
kinda like trying to load a picture in DOS
without a graphical program

makes logical sense, eh?
i use KDE mostly with my Mandrake

I'm glad to hear that you're confident about getting the connection up again. I'm just trying to understand why that connection didn't work before with SETI when you had no problems pinging a site.

When I put a music cd into the drive, and then go to the cd player and hit the start button, it won't play the cd. It just sais its paused, and when I hit play again, it still sais its paused. Wierd:confused:
