This device is used. I'm trying to find out if it is a burner as well. If anyone knows, could you tell me?

Creative Encore pc-dvd 12x with dxr3 model mk5006.

It's paid for. Until I find the manual, I'll keep it.

This is just a DVD ROM
is not a DVD burner if that's what you are trying to figure out.

I have that one.

what do you want to know?

Is it good and how old is it?

Would you recommend it for quality? Was this the first and last that they ever made? I haven't tried it yet but I'm going to install it soon. I hope that it doesn't brake down easily or anything. Is yours still working?

yes it's very good indeed.

i still run my 8x DVD same model as yours, + the Dr-x3 that you got.

That is what confused me. I don't know what Dr-x3 is.
Was this the only model creative labs ever made?
By the way mine is a: Creative Encore PC-DVD 12x with Dxr3 Model MK5006. It's slightly different from yours.

DxR3 is a hardware DVD decoder, it saves you having to play DVD's in software.. if you have a lower spec PC it cuts out any stutter and gives smooth play. I have one, they are very good!!

Is there a download for playing DVDs all over the world for this device? Or can you tell me where to find the latest download?

caliphe,

The DxR3 card is just a hardware decoder, it will happily play anything!! The problem lies with the DVD player itself. I have just had a read through the manual for my setup and the regional code is set in software when you install the DVD player. It says that you have the opportunity to change the region code up to five times, after that the region code will be set permanently.
I'm sure some of the gurus in here will have a solution!! but I have set mine to region 2 (Europe) and have no idea if there is a workaround..

The Encore 12x Dxr3 came out in 1999. I know this because it came out about the same time I bought my Dxr2.
The hardware decoder card is used for older systems or systems where you want to be able to watch the DVD on your television.
As for the Region Codes, you can only change it 5 times. But, why would you really need to change it this many times? When you change the Region Code, your only changing it in the software not the actual decoder card. A program called DVD Genie will allow you to reset the Region Code.

Caliphe: "Is it compatible with Windows XP Pro or is there anything I can do to make it compatible?"

Try HERE (http://www.americas.creative.com/support/files/download.asp?Centric=111&OS=13)
As for the software to play the DVD, you can either use the built in player found in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dvdplay.exe or install the Win2k (NT) WDM file from the cd.
If your system is better than a PII 400 (AMD 450) then you can use the DVD player without the Dxr3 decoder card. You'll just need a soft decoder. Such as WinDVD or PowerDVD XP.

I'm using the Duron 1.2 and 256 mb of ram. I will be upgrading constantly but this should be enough for running XP Pro & DVD.

Sorry for getting back so late.

That will run a DVD using a software decoder just fine. But, if you want to view the DVD on a TV, then the easiest way to do it will be with using the Decoder card.

Is the PCI card packed in the box a soundcard too? And if so is it good? Could I upgrade it for something better that still does the same job or is this card in a league by itself? The 3.5 inch disk reads Soundblaster.

Had the Creative 12x DVD for ages now and still works fine....I did not buy the decoder card as my system was fast enough to do it in software.
As for playing multi-region DVD's you might want to have a look into (dare I say it here) errr.. some of the DVD region crack programs....

Background on region codes etc can be found here:-
http://www.fourmilab.ch/documents/dvdregion/

and DVD region crack downloads are here:-

http://www.dvdvideo.co.nz/dvd_downloads.htm

but there are heaps more crack programs if you look for eem....Try looking into the DIVX websites and you'll find other 'interesting' tools for DVD's..:)

Please note thatI have not personally used any programs as have not had the need ...yet :)

I have only one PCI slot available now. I'm using ecs k7s5a mobo w/built in sound. I have graphics card, tv tuner, modem, and drx3 decoder. I want to add a usb 2.0 hub and a sound card. My grahics card is AGP. Any suggestions?

By the way, my tv tuner is for making money by taking vhs and burning it to dvd.

HOW IN THE WORLD ARE YOU GOING TO INSTALL ALL THAT STUFF WITH ONLY 1 PCI SLOT?!?!?! :x

Something has to go...Probably the modem...change it for a USB one and that'll free the slot or just put up with the on-board sound.

I think that I'm going to try the modem idea. Also can I get a good 5 port USB hub in the 2.0 version? If so give me a discription. I'm rather still new but learning.

Here is a USB 2.0 with 5 ports from Belkin but it's a bit pricey in my opinion :_

I have an encore dxr3 pci card myself. Got it for free from a creative 12x dvd kit, the dvd itself died passed its warranty period.
Currently running in my PIII 933 system running win2kpro.
I'm also using an LG cdrw/dvd rom 12x8x32. Works great with it. However though, all my slots on my asus p3b-f board are filled up except for the last one next to the agp slot.

So If I want to add another pci card, I'll take out that encore dxr 3 because my msi geforce4 mx440 card came with dvd software. So I can use that instead.

Depending on what graphics card you have there Caliphe, it may have come with xp compatible dvd software. So, if it comes down do needing another pci slot, take out the encore dxr3 card and use the videocard's dvd software instead.

Why not fit a AMR modem instead?

seems a shame not to use the slot as your pushed 4 space :)
