Hi I am a new poster but have been a newsletter subscriber and watcher for a while. I need some help with a problem at work.{edit}
We have a 12 PC Lan at work. Win98 stations Win2k Server.
All the stations are working and so forth except one.
We have a Cable ISP and are using DHCP on a Linksys router and a 16 port Linksys switch.
I can't get 1 of the win98 systems up on the network. The switch sees the station I get a link light but I can't get the station to use the router. I don't know but it doesn't seem to be giving out an IP to the station.
Any ideas????
Thanks for any help

Welcome to SysOpt?
More details would be nice:
1. What the IP and Subnet Masks assigned to Win98 and other PCs? Are the they compatiible?
2. Are you using Client for Microsoft Networks as the primary logon in Win98?
3. Are you using a known Username and Password on Win98? Those need to be entered on each WIn2K PC.
4. Is the cable in use a patch or crossover cable?
5. Which port is the cable connected to on the switch? Uplink or standard?

Indeed, check how many Clients you are allowing in the DHCP server option screen of the Linksys Router.
Also Like what Bill said, make sure its not connected to the last or first port that is using the Uplink
when you use a Unlink port, the port 1, or last port gets dissabled.
check your manual to see if it's the last port or the first port.
ignore if you are not using the uplink port.
another thing to check
Win98
Network Neighbourhood
TCP/IP
Properties
make sure is set to
"Obtain an IP address automatically"
you can check with
Start
RUN
winipcfg.exe
Ok
make sure to view with [More Info>>] option

It is not on the uplink. I will have to check the router cause we recently added a PC and it may be out of clients or what not.
The IP is set to "Obtain automatically"
I check it using winipcfg and the settings are of the auto assigned values. Not the ones the router should be handing out.
The PC was just moved. We had the Old PC vid card went out so we moved this one in there. The old PC Lan connection was working but now will not.
Thanks for the help and keep it coming!:p

1. The DHCP scope is not allowing another node on the network. Check the router config and add more.
2. The network connection is not viable.
The NIC is good. Sometimes, uninstalling the drivers for it and restarting will fix this because the default setting is "Automatic" on installation. You could also try assigning a static IP in the same range, rebooting and then switching to DHCP again.

You have not yet answered Bill's question

It is a patch cable Not a crossover. Like I said it worked fine up until a few days ago.

First check the router config and then uninstall the NIC drivers and reboot.

Because I don't know anything about how to check the config of the router)-| I went ahead and removed the NIC and rebooted.
Unfortunately that didn't work.
I will have to get our network guy out here I guess to config the router. Unless anyone has some basic tips;)
Thanks again

Try this:
1. In a browser address bar, type 192.168.1.1 and press Enter.
2. Password is admin - no username!
3. Click on the DHCP tab.
How many DHCP users are allowed there? Are there enough? If some clown came in and added a laptop to the network (or a wireless access point), it may have bumped your PC off. Add another user and click Apply.

i can do it remotely for you if you don't mind.
linksys has the option to do remote management.
if you do change your password first, so that after i finish the changes, you can change it back to whatever you like.
but if you are worried about hacking and stuff.
then don't do it, and wait for your network guy.

It BETTER be changed, else you can get hacked extremely easily by anyone who knows your IP#s

Excuse my wonderful grammar.
Well turns out it is most likely the router. It got hit in a lightning storm we had a week ago. THey even have a new one ready to be installed this weekend.
