Hi all,
I want to network a iMac G3 (which has built in ethernet) to a PC. The Mac has OS9 and the PC is using Windows XP Pro. The pc has a standard nic installed 10/100mbps. I want to use straight forward crossover cable, but i was wondering how to set it up! Do i need special software on the PC or Mac so they can see each other. I want to use it to fileshare, printershare and internet connection share. What do you guys/gals recommend?

Yes You Can, But No You Can't
Yes you can do all that sharing and file stuff.
But no you cannot just use a CROSS OVER connection.
how will your other computer to the internet anyways. ;)
Lets say you add another 2nd NIC on the other computer, you might as well get a cheapo Router, cost the same, well maybe $20 bucks more the at the very MOST

Doing it the right way
to do what you are asking for the right way you have 4 choices
1. NT/2K Server or Advance Server
2. Novell Netware Server
3. LINUX
4. FTP site
for any of those previous choices you'll need to have you MAC and PC connected to a hub at the very least
Cross over will work but it's the worse way. You'll find problems later.
the first 3 options you can print and file share
the last you can file share, and will need a work around for printing
i'll go into detail later, only if anybody ask, else it is pointless to explain it all if you can't come up with any of that stuff.

well the internet is still going to be access through a (gulp) 56k modem in either pc or mac, as cable, adsl or anything like that is not availiable in this particular area.
Its got to be using the Mac OS9 and WindowsXP pro as this is what OS's my gf has.
Its gotta be a crossover as she won't buy a hub, router etc.... all she needs/wants is a cable and mybe some compatibility software. I have not interconnected Macs with PC's before only PC's so i'm not sure how to go about it.

you'll have to get a connection software like this:
http://www.miramar.com/miramarweb.nsf/web/prod_nav_pcm_pcmproductsindex
It's gonna be about $200 us with the shipping.

That one or DATA Viz that's what EVERY MAC owner uses.
it's kinda like Norton + Adobe + pcAnywhere combined
but still you need a way to conect the PC and the MAC
and a cross wired cable wont do it.

That's BS - a crossover will work fine. Ethernet is Ethernet is Ethernet - Mac, Unix, Linux, BeOS, Solaris and Windows all use Ethernet and TCP/IP and the network/media layers are standardized.
