I just upgraded some parts and my system refuses to work. With the new parts I bought are:
AMD XP 1600
Nvidia GeForce 2 200 64M
Chaintech 7AJA2 Motherboard
IBM Deskstar 80GB 7200RPM HD
I loaded Windows 2k, because it was my only boot disk, then upgraded to Windows XP. After two or three restarts though, my computer would freeze while trying to load Mup.sys while attempting to load in SAFE MODE. I then formatted my hard drive and tried reinstalling Windows 2k, but my computer keeps freezing up during the OS installation/setup. I tried installing the OS on my old 10GB hard drive that I know works, and it still freezes. My CPU is kept extremely cool by an enormous heat sink. I've tried removing my sound card in case that had a conflict with the onboard audio, but that didn't work. I replaced the GeForce with my old Voodoo3 in case that was the conflict, but my computer just started freezing up even sooner in the boot process. I'm down to either setting my computer on fire or shooting myself. Any suggestions?

I have experianced these exact sysptoms on my GF's Pc about 2 weeks ago and it was down to faulty memory, once this was replaced the system worked fine. Each time i tried to install Windows XP,2000,ME,98 and even 95 it crashed. At first it would install the OS but was very buggy, then it just decided enough was enough and wouldn't install anything.
Only thing now is the crappy load times at 133fsb arrrrrghhh :(

OK, as far as upgrading goes, when you upgrade the motherboard, you must format and re-install Windows. If you don't this may cause Windows not to boot up because Windows cannot cope with such a huge upgrade.
Remember that the motherboard assigns different IRQ and other miscenelennous addresses for windows. When you upgrade the motherboard, Windows doesn't find the right addresses since the new motherboard may not have the same addresses as recorded in Windows.
Hopefully, you've backed up your data. :)

You did not mention Ram and Power Supply(~300W min).
Try to change the ram settings manualy in the Bios...

Thanks for all the replies. After I posted the message, I cleared my CMOS and just hit Load Optimized Defaults and then tried installing everything and it all installed fine. I don't understand. One thing though, my CPU is 1.4Ghz. The motherboard is supposed to handle up to 1.4, so I went into CMOS and clocked the CPU that high, but then my computer wouldn't output to the monitor. Right now the CPU is clocked at 1.05, which is the default, but I don't understand why it won't go higher. Oh yeah, I checked my RAM, and two sticks are PC-133 and one is PC-100. Problem? With all three I have 512MB, and with the 133's I have 384MB. Could mixing the 100's and 133's be giving me problems? Should I lower my RAM for the sake of only using 133's? Thanks.

Sure they do. You just have to clock them all to 100 mhz FSB, but mixing some types of ram can cause problems. I would just use the PC133 ram and sell or give the PC100 to someone who can use it on a board that doesn't support the higher bus speed.

I've had no problems with this. I used my windows 98 install from my old IBM K6/2 550 on my current TBird system with no problems, and I've gone from a Shuttle AK31 to a MSI KT3 Ultra on my current windows ME install. 9x OSes have no problems with swapping motherboards.
I have heard that windows 2000/XP doesn't appreciate this, but I haven't tried it.

Well, I pulled out the old PC 100 and my comp seemed to be running faster, which is good. However, I installed some networking components, specifically those to allow me to share directories over a network, and now Win XP locks up during start up. The screen flashes blue two or three times and then it freezes. However, I CAN start Win XP in safe mode. What's the problem and how can I fix it?
