Are Gateway's new cases still gay about cooling? I have a friend that wants a Gateway 500-series with a load of options and I want to know if this has a lot of potential for longevity.

what do you mean??? I have had multiple Gateways (seeing as how I worked there ...) and the cooling seemed fine to me for a "retail" machine. If you want longevity build it yourself!!!

I have two Gateway systems that are aging nicely. One is a Pentium Pro 200 and the other a 700 MHz Athlon Classic. Neither have any case fans. If the cooling isn't good enough they will replace your stuff for free anyway, so what's the problem?
