Can anybody tell me how to get the cover off a Compaq Presario.
Take the screws out and it's still like fort knox.

I am assuming you are talking about the front cover?

There are plastic snap tabs on the inside of the box. You have to press these tabs away from each other and pull the cover away from the box. If I remember correctly there are 3 sets of tabs. The back tabs are hard to get to so you can either use a screw driver to push the tabs or take the backside of the box off to get to them.

No I'm talking about the metal jacket,
you take the screws out of the back of the terminal, and it should just slide off but it just stays there like it's been superglued,(I hope it hasn't been superglued)

Looks like I might have to change my handle to prevent confusion, rowanp.

Anyway, did you remove the little gold seal on the back of the chassis?

Did you remove the 6 phillips screws on the back? I'd just grip both side of the case with my palms and lift up about 10 degrees to unhook the top edge from under the lip.
Unless you have the newer Presario slide-out chassis with a pull handle.

Just think how much fun it's going to be when you try to put it back on!

EDIT: Sorry, I know that doesn't help. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Like Toadman said. Take the screws out the back and grab the "jacket" with both hands and give it a quick jerk and it should come loose. It is probably just a tight fit. Mine was a pain to mess with because it was such a tight fit.

I had to take one apart a few weeks ago......could not figure it out...until I found one last screw...keep looking for screws..especially in places where they arent needed. Good Luck!

Compaq should look into building bomb shelters

Btw After I put it back together, needless to say , I had extra screws http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks fellas,

Will try your suggestions, but I'll take a 4lb hammer with me just in case

My 7470 only has 3 screws that hold it in place. Once those are removed, pull on the small handle at the rear. And like what was mentioned, break the Gold Seal !

After the screws are all out pulling from the bottom back at you dislodges it and then up and back.

I found a 22oz hammer did just fine to end my Compaq woes,I'm sure 4lbs is pure overkill. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif This was for a 5030 so your model may need more.
