hello all.

I am having trouble linking our two computers. i can find my wifes computer using my machine but their is nothing their.
usualy it will show the c: drive as a folder. she can access mine and transfer files both to and from mine.

I am fairly certain we have file sharing activated on both machines.

we have put a new hard drive in the wifes machine, but if i am finding the computer, you would think i should be able to access the c: drive.

I do use a fire wall since we are on cable and I rarley shut my machine down. but if she is accessing me with no problems i am kinda eliminating the fire wall as the problem.

any thought on the matter would be apreciated. thanks in advance, ward

Windows versions?

Have you set up shares on her PC? You must share C before you can see it. If her PC is WinXP, she may have the XP firewall activated. Look in the properties for TCP/IP on her LAN connection in Advanced. Also, your logon account must be added to hers in order for you to have access to her PC over the network.

hello bill, thanks for the reply.

win 98se is the os on her machine. I can find file sharing options in one place, the network folder in control panel.

it seems to me i have seen a folder that allowed me to share c: but i cant remember where i saw it.(it was a while back)

anyway, I will look around and see what I can see.

if you happen to know what folder i should be looking for I sure would apreciate the heads up. thanks again. ward.

ok, it came back to me! you were right bill. i didnt have c: shared, and it was located in the file option of the c:\ folder. as I had mentioned i have seen it before but since I have only been their once when we first linked the machines over a year ago i forgot it existed.

regards, ward

She can always access your machine, regardless of what kind of setup she has, as long as her pc is on the LAN

on her machine go to the Control Panel ---> Network
and see if her w98 has the File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks installed.

if it's not, install it
if it's, then as Bill said, make sure you have Shared your drive

right click on the drive letter you want to share, and select share.

you can also directly type in

\\computer-name\share-name

so like

\\wifescomputer\c

and now you should have access to that computer stuff

The easiest way to share a drive or folder is to right-click the drive/folder and select Sharing. Did you know that you can share a specific folder and then map that folder on another PC as a drive? Neat stuff!

hey guys, thanks for the idea,s.

what is meant by mapping your drive. I have seen it in lots of places but have no idea what it means. i figure if its working(the computer) dont f@@k with it.

I would like to know more about these options, so if any of you have any recomended reading, post a link or point me in the right direction, Isure would be obliged. thanks again. ward.

Mapping is always done on the remote PC. Right-click Either My Computer or My Network Places (I HATE that insipid name) an select Map Network Drive. Whichever drive you select, you can set it to map only during this session or have the drive available at logon every time.

The remote PC has no idea whether the shared resource is a drive or a folder. It will always map as a drive.
