I have been reading about overclocking pc and it sounds cheaper than buy a new processor. I know that my motherboard will hold up to a 766MHz processor. how do i get the details on how to do this. I try a seach but not much help.
1. It is a Gateway Essential 400MHz
celeron pc
Micro tower case
2. Int sound and 8MB AGP
3. 128 MB Memory
4. 6.8 GB hard drive.
5. motherboard freeman what ever that means?

You should be able to do it by upping your FSB. Never heard of your m/board brand. You need to change your FSB from the BIOS or on-board jumpers, if it has them. Check your m/board manual.
I successfully o/clocked my Cel-466 to 546, by upping the FSB from 66 to 83 Mhz. Make sure you have either PC100/PC133 RAM and good cooling before you start.

I really don't think it will make a noticable enough difference in your situation, c-ray. (check your other thread)
100mhz will hardly be noticable, except in benchmarks. You want to double your mhz. THAT will make a big difference.
