I'm based in the UK (near Liverpool) and use BT HomeHighway ISDN to access the Internet. My area has no cable and none of the local exchanges are ADSL-enabled, with little chance of either happening in the near (or distant) future. Satellite Internet is a possibility, but it's useless for gaming, unless I'm willing to pay a fortune to have loads of hardware installed, so i'm stuck with either a 64K access or 128K if I'm willing to pay for two lines.

I've been thinking of writing to BT to check out the possibility of them reducing the cost of HH - for example, by allowing me to use the 128K capacity without charging me for both lines - sort of a 'goodwill' gesture to those of us who live in areas where the infrastructure for fast access is limited.

It's a long shot, but if there's anyone out there who is in a similar situation, let me know if your willing to do the same thing - perhaps a few people suggesting the same thing might at least get them thinking...

BT / goodwill ??? like chalk and cheeze old chum - register your interest on BT's website, they will come to you when a local exchange is adsl enabled.

I had to wait nearly a year. Do not let them try to fob you off if you are "too far" from the exchange. I am 6.9km away - surfing from dawn till dusk.... I beleive the "offical limit" used by their salesteam during the order process is 5km. YMMV

You will probably find that most isp's will require a BT Line, so if you really want BTOpenworld soon, better move house :(

Yes, my friend, I am well versed in the BT dark art of frustrating their 'customers' - I am certainly (as you can tell) grasping at straws. I've already tried to sell my house 3 times!!

I did read yesterday in BT are looking at piloting a new adsl option for rural areas - they'll provide temporary 'black boxes' to allow small numbers of users access and to test growth in demand locally. After a period of time, given enough demand, they will then be willing to upgrade the exchange permanently. I only live half a mile away from my exchange and registered my interest months ago. According to their web site, there were only about 20 like-minded people registered for the same exchange, so I ain't holding my breath. :(
