I recently bought an MSI G4 MX440-T (MS8861) 64 MB DDR agp video card. (Until now I have been using a pci 64 mb video card) I tried installing it in the computer but I either got a black screen (no post) or a screen telling me that it is checking the NVRAM at which point it went into this half-screen doing all sorts of weird stuff (looked like a defrag screen in windows). I have even tried re-installing my motherboard agp drivers just to make sure, but that did nothing. (My pci card still works fine by the way)

My system config is:
WIndows XP
amd 1800 xp processor
ECS K7S5A mb
384 mb sdram (pc133)
80 gig hd (ibm)
soundblaster live soundcard
a network card and modem

I would greatly appreciate if anyone could give me some help! Especially someone who has the same motherboard and an agp video card....

THanks

I recently built an ECS K7S5A system and had no difficulties. Many members use the same board, but I've seen no evidence of GF4 problems yet.

I would suspect a bad video card. Can you arrange to try your card in another system and/or try another in yours?

just a thought, but check the VGA monitor cable doesn't have any busted pins. Have a look at the end of the monitor cable and straighten out the pins if any seem squahed or out of place.

Thanks for the replies...

I did check the pins and they are fine. They work with my other video card just fine.

I suspect that this is a dud video card. It is the only explanation. I have tried uninstalling all the video drivers and starting fresh, but I still can't get the thing to work (what's really interesting is the computer boots up fine, just the screen is black....the odd time I get some picture it gives me this screwed up screen).

Since I have read that other people use a G4 card with the K7S5A motherboard without any problems it must be a busted card. I will return it and see.

Thanks for the help!

Hey, just a question...

Would there be any compatibility problem using SDRAM (pc133) memory with a DDR sdram video card? I wouldn't think so but I just wanted to ask.

Thanks

I am returning this agp card for a new one. I am looking forward to getting a new one. ( i hope it was the card and not my motherboard)....this pci card, even though it is 64mb, is not all that great.

I recently bought a video cam but the thing is choppy as hell with the pci card. That should change with an agp card....I hope!

HA! I got the **** thing working! It took me 2 days to figure it out but it is running smoothly now.

I originally thought it was a bios thing, so I tried turning off the ACPI, lowering the bus speed (just a guess), and everything else I could think of to no avail.

I then tried removing my network card because I thought that it might be an addressing problem. Voila! After taking out that card it works fine. It must have been an IRQ problem or something. I have onboard LAN so that card was redundant anyway.

It was sure nice to figure out the problem. I hope this helps anyone else out there having similar problems - REMOVE SOME OF THE OTHER PCI CARDS and see if that does the trick.
