I know, I know, tons of this topic out there, but most of them are asking if its possible to connect 2 computers using crossover cable, HOWEVER, I already have done that and so....
--------------------------------------------------------------

Heres the problem! Got WinXP desktop and win98 laptop. Both are using D-link 10/100 adapters. Have CROSSOVER cable. In XP ,, went into the Network Wizard and set everything up, it prompted me to copy few files on to floppy, so i did, and used that flopy to setup another network on my laptop. so now both laptop and desktops are good to go. Pluged in the CrossOver caBLE, but now, neither laptop nor desktop will show the other computer. I enabled c: drive sharing on both computers.
1)Can someone help with some advice?
2)Should IP address on both desktop and laptop be the same?
3)Havent setup user accounts on both computers, should both be the same and be administrative priviliged?
thanks in advance :t

make sure both systems are in the same workgroup.

you should NEVER have 2 systems with the same IP. they can be something like 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2. they should have the same subnet mask, 255.255.255.0 should work for you.

you need the same account on the win98 as the xp system. you don't have to give admin rights unless you want to.

:) :) :)
Yes!! Got it to work! And didnt even have to setup same users!! :) I just messed with IP address a little (which I think didnt have anything to do with the problem) and changed both computers to have the same subnet mask (I guess they were different) and thats it!
:) :t
Thanx guys!

If these are connected to each other on a crossover then your 10/100 is beeing used on the cross over you arnt connected to the internet in less youhave yet another 10/100.. If that is not the case

Your lan ip will be different from the internet ip so you will need to adjust some things
Then you need to set your ip differently to use your new t1
settings either set it to the right stuff or use auto detect ip...

are you using ics? you didn't say that you were connecting the desktop to anything except the laptop, so i didn't mention it. if you are using ics from the desktop, then you should set the laptop to obtain ip automatically. the desktop will set its own ip, i believe at 192.168.1.1. otherwise, you will have to enter dns, default gateway, etc.

Hello,
thanx for replying. I should have replied right away, cause i fixed the problem as soon after I posted it. It turns out that since I changed IP address and subnet mask in order to share files, however, in order to get back on the internet I need to switch the option in Networking back ON in "autodetect IP". Dont know why, maybe because the subnet mask needs to be different between the internet and sharing files with other computers. Oh well.... :t
