Hi
Well I got this old 10 gb 5400 rpm WD Hardisk from my old computer and stuck it into my new (not so new though) computer. The new one has a Quantum 7200 rpm 30 gb. The two hard disk are on the same ide port. What I was wondering is that does the old hard disk affect the overall performance of the new one? Should I keep them together or just chuck the 10 gb?

not it wont have a difference.
the drive itself is what Drives the output.
of course when it reaches the BUS, it'll still go as fast as the BUS allows it to go.

If they are both in DMA mode, it won't affect their performance

Although it looks as if this thread mite be now closed, I'd like to quickly jump in and recommend changing the settings in windows so all your temp, internet temp and other junk files end up on the older drive instead of clogging the windows hdd and also consider arranging your virtual memory to run off the other drive as well. If implemented properly, a second hdd can work wonders for ya. Just my 2cents  .

Yes i always do that with my system, and it performs real good.

it also works with a Dual Boot System

Yeah I was thinking of moving the pagefile to the other drive but the thing that struck me is that its a 5400 rpm udma 4 10gb, would I lose performance putting the page file on the slow disk or are the cumulative gains bigger than the losses?

how much RAM do you have?
if you have more than 1 Gig of RAM
i suggest you to put the PageFile in a RAMDrive
