I recently had a problem which i have just resolved today (sort of)

We have a small peer LAN setup with a few Win98 machines, a W2k, and 2 XPs. This is hooked together with a switch, and everything is 10/100. Into the switch is connected a router, which is attached to a Cable Modem. So here was the dilemma:

speed on the net was great for all of my machines (Win 98 and W2k); however, the Win98 machine suffered on the LAN when transferring from th other 2 win98 machines. Here's a simple diagram of the win 98 machines numbered to (hopefully) simplify my explanation:

1<-------------------> 2 <------------------------> 3
My Win98 W98-Roommate1 w98roommate2

when transferring files on the LAN to 1 (from either 2 or 3) the transfer speeds were incredibly slow. I DL'd a packet logging program called CommView which told me that 1 was receiving an average of about only 30 packets per second, when the others were around 700 or so. Of important note is that when transferring to 2 or 3 from 1, the transfer speeds were great - the only problem was data coming into 1. And oddly, the transfer speeds were great coming to 1 when transferring from anything other than '98. (ie copying from XP or 2k to 1 was great)

After several attempts i discovered the flaw, sort of, and this is where i need the help of the knowledgable folks that make up this great forum.

The problem came from some registry changes i had made that i got from speedguide.net to enhance data transfer from my cable modem, and it worked for that, but apparently screwed up my Win 98 machine on the LAN. Attached are the old (bad) registry settings, and the new (good) settings i switched to to make it work on the LAN again. Both are in the same text file since it seems you can only attach one file. If someone could give me an idea of which one (or more) settings were causing the issue, i would be grateful. I'd like to have my computers optimized for the cable modem, and still perform well on the LAN. My guess is it's either the TTL setting or possibly the default receive window size. Thanks in advance,
an old time regular here who wishes he had enough time these days to still be more of a regular here!

IMHO, the only tweak you need is TCP Recieve Window. I've tried the other tweaks and I did'nt see a difference in performance. Maybe others have. Keep the "Good settings" just add the TCP tweaks. You should see a boost.

W9x/ME :

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD\MSTCP]
"DefaultRcvWindow"="32767"

2000/XP:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters]
"GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize"=dword:00007fff
