I am having trouble with what is labeled IBM
harddrive. It has an model # DPEA-31080
However, it does not have a serial # needed that for warranty.
It's all Black with 2 sight windows on either side, no a full circuit board (shape like a backwards L and large c shaped (silver) on top.
I have seen many types of HD's by cannot ID this one. I am thinking it was make for IBM by some other company. Any Thoughts?
I did a search at www.dogpile.com (http://www.dogpile.com) on the part number. All I did was copy and paste from your post. THIS (http://www.storage.ibm.com/storage/techsup/hddtech/dpea/dpeajum.htm) was the first thing out of the chute! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I just had a IBM drive die and I sent it to a data recovery place. Apparently, these drives are originally made by Maxtor. The problem with my drive is that the board needs to be rebuilt but these drives need the exact same parts due to some type of security thing. The place is currently looking for the parts.
I will check when I get home to see if it happens to be the same model number. If it is, I may be able to get a lot more details for you.

Ok, it's a different drive from mine.
The data recovery can cost from $300 to $3000. If it's just keystrokes and stuff it's at the lower end. For the burnt board on mine it's $1000 if they can fix it. The charge nothing if they can't get the data you specifically want.
If they can't find another 22.5GB DPTA-352250, I am out of luck.

I was careless with a friend's Western Digital drive while getting ready to clone the data to his new one. I put it on a metal surface and smoked something.
I removed the controller board and found a surface-mount inductor that was burned. I replaced it with one from some scrap gear and it worked!
Maybe one of you will be able to share the good luck. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

It tried http://www.mfarris.com/erv/erv.html
for two different HD and the price is the same 500.00 for each! Now I know I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree, but you can by a whole lot or HD for 500.00 clams

Problem is that some people have data which they desperately need off of a dead drive. I gave suffered a similar problem in the past, as I have a dead Fujitsu drive setting here with several custom software applications archived to it. At the time, I lost my backup of the drive, and I was looking at $500-1000 to salvage this drive's data. Luckily I found the backup in a parts bin before sending the drive off to be salvaged. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

IBM Hard Drives are *usually* made by IBM.
