I'm planning to get a dvd and was wondering which should I get. A 10x scsi dvd or a 16x ide dvd? Both are Pioneer's and roughly around the same price. oh, I also have a scsi card. right now, I'm leaning towards the scsi version. But at 10x, I don't know will the scsi interface make up for the slower spin speed than the ide version.

I think I read somewhere that all DVD movies read at 1X and anything more than that is used to copy files from DVDs. If you're going software decoding I'd reccomend the SCSI because the drive itself uses less CPU cycles, freeing up more to run the decoding software.

Unless you need the faster speed for DVD copying/backup, then I personally would go for the SCSI drive. It will offer superior efficiency as NigthHawk indicated above. This is asssumimg you will be using a standard CD-ROM drive for standard CD applications (ripping, playing games, etc.). If not, then the 16x IDE drive may be preferable since it will likely offer a high CD-ROM transfer rate.

DVD movies only play at 1x, so extra speed only for DATA. either way, SCSI is always the better choice.

Get the 10x SCSI. I have a 6x Toshiba DVD and a 4x CD-RW, I'm not a gammer so I can't say anything about that. But for reading data or "on the fly" burning, I have no problems what-so-ever.
Thanks for your replies. I've decided to go with the scsi.

If you got less than 500 MHz, i would go for the SCSI since it uses a lot less CPU power when reading.
If money is the issue, and not MHz, i would go for the IDE.
The first DVD-drive i had was an IDE. Playback was a bit choppy on my system (K6-!!! 450, G400), using 100% CPU when watching DVD. Then i bought a Pioneer 6x SCSI DVD and my CPU load fell to some 80%.
Now i can both view movies and crack a little RC5 in the meantime http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
