Printer & scanner conflicts

I own a Storm Totalscan Express and also a Lexmark Optra 40 printer. If I have the scanner installed (parallel port or USB), it conflicts with the printer. Where will the problem most likely be, and how can I resolve it?

It likely is necessary to set the port for ECP/EPP. That cured what appeared to be a conflict with my Umax 1220P and Cannon BJC-620.
