I'm trying to install second CPU on my Hot-649A dual slot 1 Spacewalker M/B, but once I put it on the computer would not start up at the first time, it kept sound click, click.......
but after I power it off and on again it will start working, on the other hand I would not be able to use RESTART from Windows.
I've test both CPU on the board with single CPU operation it run very well.
Spec:
1. Spacewalker Hot-649A M/B Dual slot 1.
2. 2 x Intel 600E slot 1 CPU (match pair)
3. 512MB PC133 SDRam.
4. W/D 80Gig H/D.
5. 250w power supply (tried 300W P/S but samething happened)
6. Windows 98SE
7. Radeon 7200 64MB AGP card.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Aaron

Pure guess, but do you have an option switch in bios for single or dual processor operation perhaps?

All right; I think I've seen this before...
Are you saying that when the computer has both procs in, it won't cold boot and it won't do a soft reboot, right? A hard reboot will then get the machine running?
If that's correct, then I *think* that is part of the mobos normal operation. I recall working with a dual proc slot 1 not too long ago that did just the same thing - whenever you powered on or soft-rebooted, you had to do a hard reset to get the machine running.
My best advice would be to...
- Check out the manual that came with the mobo (to see if that is indeed normal operation of the board)
- Check for any firmware updates that might fix the problem

I still have several slot 1 mobos running.
I do not have any of those problems with my systems. I would go thru the BIOS settings very carefully and verify that they are all set correctly.
Check an article I wrote here:

What OS are you running? Only WinNT, Win2K, WinXP, and Linux works with dual processor systems. It is a very easy process to upgrade from single to dual processor drivers in Win2k/XP. If you need help, just ask.

I've review the Bios set up, but still the same!!, I'm still running Win98SE, and I'm going to up grade to Windows XP Pro, but the problem is I can even goes to the windowns screen, cause the system would't start(after a few hard boot the system will up and run normally), is power supply the cause of problem?
Thanks.

I could be wrong but i think that win98se is not dual processor compatible.
in my 980 page win98 professional reference manual it makes no reference to dual cpus.
sorry if im wrong but i am sure i heard this somewhere.

So you are running the computer just fine on 2 procs using SE, but only after a few power cycles, right?
Does a hard reset (pushing the button, not through windows) also solve the problem the way that a few power cycles does? If I were to make an educated guess, I'd say that the mobo is just initializing, finding the second proc, and needing a RST signal to strap the BIOS properly. If I'm right, then that means that you are always going to have to push reset (or cycle power) even if you install a new OS, because this is a hardware issue.

yes Quandary is correct, i had a similar issue with a Dual CPU mobo of mine.
but it got fixed after a BIOS UPGRADE.
so you might check into that.

WIN 98 IS NOT dual processor compatible PERIOD

OF course it's NOT
he's going to use WinXP, but right now he's having problem with Win98 as is.
so he wants to fix it first.
and Win98 does work on a 2 cpu mobo.
but it will only use 1 cpu when it's loaded, that's all.
i've done that prenty of times
i always use Win98 for Dual Boot as a backup for Emergency repairs.
Makes life so much more easier when some unexpected annoying NT problems arise.

Not ALL mobo's are compatible (chipset problems)...

I think I'll try hook up a 450W power first, if not I'll up grade to Windows XP with single CPU, than plug in my second one, see what's going to happen, but anyway, thank you for all yours input, I'll keep you guys up date.
Thanks:)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo!!!
If you do that you'll have a hard time making WinXP regognize the 2nd CPU
and you'll have to end up Reinstalling the whole WinXP again.
So is best to install WinXp with both CPU intheir slots

Allgamer..
You mean I should do a up-grade from Win98SE with both CPUs on?
Thanks.

I've successfully upgraded to Windows XP, and the system recognized my Dual CPU, and now I can run my CD burnner, and other applicationns at the same time without running out of system resources, but the the start up problem still there, I'm still looking for a high power power supply to test it and will post result.
Thanks.

>.<;;
¬.¬<Okay, for the *third* time...>
The problem is with your motherboard. Go look for a flash for your bios. If there isn't a flash for your bios, you'll just have to deal with it. That is how it works. A new power supply will not fix your problem.
This post is made with my full 95% "I'm pretty **** sure" endorsement, but, as always, you have permission to razz me if I'm wrong.

Thank you for the advice, but I already have the most up to date Bios flashed, you know the board was manufactured on 1999, they don't have it up date that often. My system run very, but the start up problem is like the coffee mark on my white shirt, I'm appreciated the respond from other user in the forum, this is very helpful.
Thanks

It is very easy to install WinNT/2k/XP with a single CPU installed and then booting into SAFE mode upgrade the computer driver from uni-processor to multi-processor driver. The process takes 5 mins. and there is NO reinstalling if done correctly.
