Ive been told for donkeys now that Vsync should alwayd be disabled as it slows the graphics down blah blah blah... more often that not ive ignored it... recently though i tried without Vsync, and it all looked AWFUL!!
Graphics tearing - the lot...
So why are people so much against Vsync when in my limited experience it makes everything LOOK much nicer overall

That's exactely what Vsync does
to Synchronize the Vertical Hz, so that you wont get image Tearing on the screen.
but for people who are after high FPS, (nVidia fans 90% of the time), then that is the way to go, so the card can go tearing the speed as fast as it can pump stuff through the AGP bus.
:D
clear like wateR?

So when i'm playing RTCW, and a gernade explodes behind a wall, but I can still see the explosion... Is that what tearing means? And would that be solved by enabling vsync?

By tearing i mean when your moving and the texture of say a wall, moves "with you" and moves out of place, creating a torn edge, it doesnt really look right...:(

OK, got it... I have vsync off by default, but I haven't noticed anything like that going on.

Ocuurs more to me when my cards overclocked or when im playing fast paced games ie shooters...
I think theres also an element of it down to your monitor (although dont quote me on it)...

I always have V-sync off and I don't get the tearing effect you are talking about so I think it could be your drivers or the overclocking you are doing!
Of course, you can turn on V-Sync with the monitor at 85 or 100hz refresh rate and the game would run great anyways!
