I have heard that the k6 2/500 is weak when it comes to floating point caluculations. Is this correct? If so, how would this affect running programs such as Excel, or AutoCad?

With its SIMD-style instructions and dual register execution pipelines, the AMD-K6-2 processor can deliver up to four floating point results per clock cycle. The AMD-K6-2/333 has a peak floating point performance of 1.333 Gigaflops, significantly greater than the 0.333-Gigaflop peak performance of a Pentium II 333, or the 0.4-Gigaflop peak performance of a Pentium II 400. The AMD-K6-2/300 has a peak floating point performance of 1.2 Gigaflops, or four times the 3D processing power of a Pentium II 300, rated at peak performance of 0.3 Gigaflops.

I don't know if this will help you but here is some information on AMD K6-2 floating point capabilities.

The K6-2 has excellent floating point performance with 3D-Now optimised software. If not it is average, the pentiums will beat it by a long way.

The K6-2 is an excellent choice for running excel, but I would be careful with autocad. If it is 3D-Now optimised it would be ok, otherwise I would look at getting an Athlon. If you want to waste money pointlessly you could spend up on a Pentiun III.
Hope this helps..

The K6-2 had the potential to beat all Celeron's and Pentium II's in raw FPU just as Sabbath said. If only AMD would of optimized their pipelines more.. the k6-2 would be a much better processor than it currently is..

Is there anything I can do to fully optimize the 3D-Now feature of this system? My son upgraded his system and gave me this chip and an ASUS P5A mobo. I have been running an old Pentium 133 and wanted to upgrade.
