It seems as thougth Windows eats away at my memory very quickly. Even running a few programs can shoot it down to low 60 % performance rating. Im wondering how my windows virtual memory setting should be set. I am running 512 megs pc133 (windows detects it as 511 megs, bios detects as 512) and am allowing windows to determin V memory settings. I hate to let windows do anything itself so any one have any suggestions to what settings i should use??

generally you use double your ram.but with as much as you have thats your call.defrag your drive first.heres a link with a couple of tweeks.

How do you check your memory? is it the system resources?? (Just wonderin', because with your RAM you shouldn't be running out of RAM that quickly.. unless you are talkin' about GDI user resources which win9x only have a limit for the amount of programs you run), try setting a swap file to about 128mb.. this should definitely be enough.. even less if you really want too, or you can disable it too, with your RAM.. if you do create one, make it preferably on it's own partition and then defrag that drive..

hi guys,
Thanx for all the replies. I am talking about system resources. There is very little in my start up save Ati drivers and internet connection.

Try not to run so many "unnecssary" programs during startup, it should free the system resource a bit.. If you really need to run lots of programs at once.. without losin' system resources (GDI user res) then go to WinNT4/2000, which don't have such things as system resources, which is much more suited to you I guess, with all that RAM you should make a change in your OS.. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

sorry wilan, but i have read that even though he has enough,he does not want to disable it.the missing swap file can pose a problem.i have read...but i think you are correct he is interpreting resourses as free memory.how is your startup menu looking lenny, have you leaned out your unneeded programs.
