Just wondered if there was a frame limiter in quake 3, as at the following settings:
Gf4 ti4200 (stock clock speeds)
1024 x 748
32bit colour depth.
Detail options maxed out
Quick UNX AA
11 bots
...however im only getting 80-102 FPS when playign - is there some sort of frame limiter or similar in quake 3??

no that i know off.
but if you Turn Off Quincux AA, and use 16bit instead of 32bit, then that can help you.

Yup - though sumink like that would be the advice id recieve... still 80fps is VERY playable so i'll keep the nicew shiny graphical bells on methinks :)

What processor are you on?
Bots churn up processing power, try playing against 1 or 2 bots and you might see your framerate shoot up, although I don't know how CPU intensive q3bots are, I know my half-life bots I use then I start to really slow down at about 8 bots.

1.33 tbird up at 1.4 (its going higher though dont worry ;))
Personally i run 9 CS bots at a time and never see any slowdown...
Hmmn, although i see your point about bots slowing down, UT gets a lil bit sluggish at max gfx with 13 bots, so same prolly applies to q3 :)

To answer your question I think the engine in Q3 maxes at 300, though I think (like HL maxed at 100fps but the default fps_max is 72) that it has a framelimiter of lower than that default.
I'm not entirely sure though, I have neither Q3 or a super computer D:
Nobody thought of VSync ?!

102 doesn't sound very much like vsync, usually that's people saying they get constant 60,72 or 90 fps.
If it's constant then it's likely to be vsync, but if it's going all over the place then vsync is likely not the cause.

And why is that ? If my monitor does 100Hz @1024x768 (my gaming resolution), and I'm satisfied with 100fps in games, should I have VSync turned off as well ?

when your monitor hz is higher that what the GPU can actually push in the game, then you lose frames

There is a frame limiter in quake 3. To turn in off you will have to go into the quake CONFIG file in windows explore. Look in the quake folder and see if you can find a file name quake3.cfg
Open up the file in Notepad and hit control+f. Then type in fps. It wil highlight something like com_maxfps "90"
Just change the number 90 to 0 and then you will get unlimited frames per second. No limiter.

The engine itself will still have a limit somewhere, half-life has a similar command (fps_max) but the engine still limits out at 100 beacuse it simply cannot do more than that whatever the circumstances.
however It's high enough with Q3 that you don't need it higher.
