I've been running a W98se peer to peer Home LAN with 1 Switch and linked to cable modem. I recently added dual boot XP pro on 1 of the 3 pc's on the lan. The original network is still working fine. XP is not. In other words, if I boot W98 the lan is working , if I boot XP pro it does not. I'm concluding its my lack of network experience or something simple I missed or likely both.
I have run the XP Network Setup Wizard on all the pc's. When XP is booted , the pc's can't see each other.
The XP Help wizard has been unsuccessful. Although it has mentioned the computer name may be in use. I tried changing it or making it the same for both W98 and XP , but no difference. Currently the pc has the same computer name listed in W98 and XP. The workgroup is the same on all pc's. After this I'm stuck.

It will work, I've had dual boot networked pcs in my home network several times (WMe/W2KPro, W98se/W2K, W98se/WXPPro).

Make sure to do the following:
-1. Make life easier, temporarily disable any fiirewall software you may be running.
0. Since you've already tried and had problems, remove TCP/IP in all OS'es, reboot and reinstall TCP/IP in all OS'es.
1. All pcs have to have the same WORKGROUP name in all OS'es. Also keeps things simple if you keep same computer name in both OS'es on a given pc.
2. All pcs need to have the exact same user account names/passwords in all OS'es.
3. All pcs need to have "Client for Microsoft Network" enabled and set as default, and you should be prompted for username/password when you boot up/login, in all OS'es.
4. All pcs should be shared (file and print sharing enabled) in all OS'es.
5. You must share the drives (e.g., C:, D:, etc.) in the W9x OS'es, and the drives and/or directories in the WinXP/W2K OS'es.

This should get you there, and you can adjust/restrict any sharing once you get everybody seeing one another.

Glad to see you replied.

A couple things to add/ask before I overhaul my network.

1. Cable ISP assigns a static IP for each box.
2. Each W98 box uses :
ZA
MS Family Logon
File and Printer sharing enabled , Shared access via password
Client for MS Networks , installed
MS Family Logon, installed
NetBEUI , installed
TCP/IP , installed
*NetBEUI is not enabled over TCP/IP , but binded to Client for MS Networks, File/Print Sharing and MS Family Logon
* TCP/IP is not binded to Client for MS Networks , File/ Print Sharing or Ms Family Logon.

I have been using the MS Family Logon ( auto at startup) instead of the Client for MS Networks as my primary network logon for each W98 box. This simple setup has been secure and relaxing to use. Shared resources are open via Explorer or Network Neighborhood unless pwd protected. Simple as pie...!
So, anyway to keep the relaxed enviroment with XP? Some family members are'nt going to like the lack of freedom and network problems will increase dramatically I'm afraid.
BTW, future upgrades include XP Home on the other boxes, and a Linksys router. If it matters ...

You shouldn't name the system the same in both OSes. This can mess up shares, etc. the other computers don't know if it's a 98 or xp system and this can mess them up. it is highly recommended that you have 2 names, like station1-98 and station1-xp.

Here's a link from technet:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q306559

You have to use a different computer name for each operating system if the computer is on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP secure domain.

It doesn't look like you're on a domain, but it wouldn't hurt to do heed their instructions. :)

LOL :D

i purposely name both the Same name, and share the same shares

so i wont have any trouble with other placces mapped to me

If it works, then keep it that way. I was just thinking of what could be causing the problem. When you bash your head into enough MCSE books like I do, something is bound to stick. :)

I think that question was on the w2k pro test. hmmmm

Thx for the replies everyone. Thought the thread was dead, besides I've been busy with other XP learning :) . Its like a new toy :p

TheBold :
XP firewall disabled or enabled makes no diff. , BPB hit on this anyway.Currently its disabled and I'm back running ZA now . Again no network.

Midknyte :
As mentioned I've tried toggling the names without success. Tried tonite again , no go. W98 still working though, thruout changes. The MS article seems to imply if your on a domain and I'm not . This is peer to peer , I'm in a workgroup, and yes - I checked and rechecked the workgroup is the same.;) So perhaps Allgamer has a point. He's obviously got it working .

Allgamer : Something I'll try when I can see the other PC's. Thx for the tip.

Now, I think the problem is I dont have NetBEUI installed on XP. If you look the W98 network is bound to NetBEUI not TCP/IP. This is the SheildsUP method I setup couple yrs. ago along with ZA . I came across a MSKB article about installing NetBEUI on XP for older networks that where still using the protocol. The needed install files are on the XPpro Retail CD . I have'nt installed it yet , since I was waiting for jmichna to reply back, who's comments /advice made me think I need to change the way I've been protecting my network. If do keep the config the way it is , how would I bind NetBEUI the same in XP.
Sure could use any good links on setting up proper/secure file and printer sharing and using it . I'm dreading "Networking for Dummies". ;)
Your comments are welcomed.
