I am thinking of building my own computer. I don't like the options that even the most customizable dell desktops have. Maybe I should go with AlienWare? I heard they are pretty good. The problem is that I don't know very much about hardware. I need to learn about hardware so that I can make smart decisions when building my computer. Can anyone recommend a site or a book that could get me up to speed?

this helped me lots.
The L.A. Times had a surprisingly good article (http://www.latimes.com/business/cutting/ttimes/20010208/t000011713.html) on the subject last Thursday.

well these are the most important things about buying or building a system
#1 what are you going to use it for ?
#2 how much $ do you want to spend on it ?
answer those 2 Q's first then start asking what you can get for that amount of $ that will do what you want.
you can spend weeks reading every thing on the net about parts and or OEM systems
it's a lot easyer just to say this is what I have to spend and this is what I want to do with it, What can I get http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
then read up on what is offered and see if it's what you want or not http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
