Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : RDRAM vs Other types?
Is RDRam worth it? My system uses it, and my friend goes on about how expensive it was the extra speed of it that wasn't needed or make a difference... he believes that SDRam is fast enough and they didn't need to start clocking ram.
Does RDRam really make a noticable difference, or will it soon?

Right now, RDRAM is the leader. DDR is catching up very quickly, though.

I think your friend is just jealous. :)

is True RAMBUS RAM is really faster, but what sucks about it is that only for P4s
yet it's also true about the Rambus RAM being too **** expensive.
because of the same thing, only P4
So that's why DDR wins in the long run, since more people uses it, and prices are just way too funny cheap, that i filled my system up to the top with 2 Gig or DDR RAM.
Real life difference no much, and in fact the AMD 2000 XP (2gig RAM )i have at home is faster than my P4 2.4 Ghz (1 Gig of RAM) here at work.
and they run the exact replica of the software. cuz i need to work from home.
LOL :D

Not gonna argue with ya. But keep in mind that work pc's usually have lesser quality stuffs in them. Like the mobo which is just as important as the cpu is for performance. Then the mem, vid and ram. Its all low quality in most buisness places. Like the 1 gig o ram. You know the just want quantity not quality-they cant afford top notch ram in that amount most times. So yeah Im sure your home built top quality pc is better than there bargin setup.

There was Rdram boards made for P3's. It was the 820 chipset. But Rdram and P3's didn't play well. The higher latency of the Rdram made the P3's feel slugish. Plus the high cost of Rdram when it came made that chipset die pretty fast. But if you look around ebay you can still find some 820 based motherboards.

rdram on the p3 was a mistake. It wasnt because of the rdram though. It was cause the p3 cant take advantage of the increased bandwidth. The P4 on the other hand does and loves rdram for it. Wouldnt waiste my time looking for a p3/rdram combo. But if your looking at p4 rdram is way faster than anything else right now.:t

Dang, when I bought my ram it was cheaper than now, it was £14 (that's about $20 I think) for 128MB ram, It's still only just falling back to that now after a rise a few months back.
Still, it's **** cheap and easily the best way to upgrade a "first-time buyer" 's PC in terms of performance/cost.

lol - back in the 486 days I bought 4 megs of ram - 1 meg per stick - for $200 (granted that was prolly ~8 years ago)
and i have a p3 533 on an i820 chipset - that comp is a beast when you throw in 512 megs of RDRAM - it really does make a difference
