I am running Win XP Pro and I was in the process of sorting through the running services. I have been using this page as a guide:

I am wondering what exactly the Indexing Service is used for? I know it indexes the hard drive, but does that make the Hd seem faster? I have a maxtor 7200 rpm 60 gig drive and 194 Megs of RAM. What are the positives and negitives of turning this feature off? Thanks in advance.

All it does is speed up random searches. Shortcuts and programs will no open faster because their paths are defined in the shortcut. You can live without it for sure. It's a bit of a hog.

I always uninstall it.

this is the #1 source of virus infection.
for types like Code Red, and others alike.
