I just purchased a 19" flatscreen monitor and there's something kinda strange about it when I set it to certain resolutions. This monitor supports up to 1600 X 1200 @ 85Hz.

Here is the strange thing. When I set my monitor to 1280 X 960 or 1280 X 1024, I get slight ripples on my screen. It looks kinda like ripples that form when you drop something in water. The strange thing is that it only happens at this resolution! I tested the monitor on 3 different systems using that are using different video cards and I get the same result. The screen looks super clean even at 1600 X 1200.

It's not a big deal since I will be using this monitor at 1600 X 1200, but I was just wondering if anyone else had this experience at certain resolutions.

What you are seeing is called the Moire (mwah-ray) Effect. It has to do with the interaction of grids. Think of looking at a picket fence through a hair comb. We see it sometimes on TV when a checked or striped piece of clothing is viewed under certain optical conditions.

Check the controls for Moire and Zoom. You may find that by zooming the display and readjusting the edges it can be minimized.

Thank you for your reply, Roy.

I tried that already but, no go! Do you think there is a possibility that the monitor is defective? I'm only having this problem at these resolutions..... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

It's just strange and I'm doubting that a monitor could be defective at just 2 resolutions.... what do you think?

Indeed it well could be a product defect. The nature of moire distortion absolutely is dependent on the size of the grid ... i.e. resolution.

My decades of exposure to Broadcast TV monitors and several years around 'puter types has shown this problem only one time. That was quite recently with a low-end 19" computer monitor.

What kind is it? I'm curious to assess the manufacturer's representations.

Found out something very interesting today... The 3 systems that I tested the monitor were all on Win2K systems. I tested the monitor on a Win98 system and had no problems at all resolutions. It appears that it's getting the Moire only on Win2K! I just don't understand how an OS can cause this..Have ideas why, Roy?

Thank god I'm not getting this Moire at 1600 x 1200.... That's the resolution I intend to use the monitor at.
