Windows Whistler. Microsoft claims that Whistler is a completely new OS that is 2000 & 98 combined, hopefully to give us the best of both worlds. Now, if this actually happens has yet to be seen. Do we have any developers here that might want to express their knowledge?

Hey Andrerio, yeah i got whistler installed i have to dual booted with a now frills install of Win ME that i have. Even after a fresh install win me still gives me errors, ugh, but i only use it for games, and to watch tv on my AIW radeon. I use Whistler for everything else. Its a **** good os, still has some kinks to work out,but thats why is in beta. microsoft, might have gotten something right.

I've been running it for a couple of days on my 700 Athlon. It seems pretty stable. It detected all of my hardware and installed all drivers itself(GeForce II, SBLive! Value, and USR external modem). Yes, it actually installed the video drivers!!! The only thing it's done wierd for me is it detected my Umax Astra 2400s 8 times. I can't get rid of the other 7, but it works just fine with the scanner & camera util that comes with Whistler. The Vista scan software does not work. DVD software doesn't seeem to go either. I've tried Matrox's DVD player from Raviscent, and PC DVD Friendly that installs on its own when you try to watch M:I2. Other than that, all is well.

Now you can call Whistler, Windows eXPerience. Here is more info:

Currently, Whistler is available to beta testers only int he 32-bit flavor. MS has ported a beta 64-bit version of the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) for the Itanium, but currently no one outside of Intel is supposed to have access to this version.

It is not "2000 & 98 combined", I really don't understand why so many people think it is.

In other words, Windows XP is the next generation of Windows, and it will be based on Windows 2000, not the old Windows 9x kernel. Windows XP will ship in the same editions as Windows 2000--that is, Professional, Server, Advanced Server, and DataCenter Server--as well as a Personal Edition for consumers that will replace Windows Me.

No, Whistler comes in two flavors: 32-bit and 64-bit. 32-bit is for Intel and AMD processors since the 386. 64-bit is Microsoft's operating system to support the Itanium and AMD's Hammer line.

Actually, Windows Whistler was also released to MSDN professional and universal subscribers last November for download and CD's were sent out in January. The 64 bit Itanium versions were also made availible for download in a couple different versions.

Thanks for the heads up on the Intaniun release through MSDN. The last I knew, it was still in testing at Intel.

Any word on the release date of a 64-bit Alpha port yet?

I don't think they will be porting to Alpha. After the dropped it for W2K, I'd assume it won't come back for Whistler

Jad,
The reason people are saying its "combined" is because it is the first version of Windows since 3.1x that is using the same kernel for home and business users. It is also the first time that Microsoft has had programmers from the 9x "house" and the NT "house" working on the same team.
