What is the best game engine out there?
Quake III is old but still used in benching...
UT is continually updated but untested...
Croteam's Serious engine is seriously cool but not as optimized...
LithTech 2 is solid but can not handle lag...
Doom III/Quake IV looks sic but is 1-3 years away...
Define the future now!

and you can find out why i voted for the New Unreal T. Engine
This new game is even superiour than Unreal Tournament 2003 itself, with added features to its original U T 2003 engine.
MAKE SURE you download the in Games movies, to compare againts the UT 2003 in games movies
Man big time difference.
Same engine
as for Quake 3 engine, man, it's outdated and obsolete now, or at least becoming obsolete.

Netcode is king and no one does game netcode like John Carmack. 3D benchmarking is all well and good, but chunky gameplay online sux. I vote for the game engine that drives all of the great games - Quake III. Kingpin died because of sucky netcode.
Doom III is an unknown, but I bet it uses the same Q3 netcode.

Quake 3, might be a better engine and have a larger game base,
(my favorite game in Quake 3 engine is StarTrek Voyager 1st person shooter.)
but.. having a good engine does not mean you have a good game, such as the example of Kingpin,
(man GTA 3 is a better game than Kingpin, and that's what Kingpin was trying to be)
as i was saying, in the example of UT2003 and Lineage 2, Lineage 2 used UT 2003 to its full extend and they even had to Add more codes not in the original UT 2003 engine, and they were able to make a much better game than its own creator did with UT 2003.
that specially goes with graphics and other in game features, and game physics, being a Massively Multiplayer Online RPG game, that usually is highly demanding in bandwitdh, not to mention graphic intensive with the new 3D stuff, using the UT 2003 engine.

The UT engine may be old but it is fast and still looks great so I would have to go with that one.

John Carmack makes the best 3d game engine. I am not really well-versed in programming but I am amazed by how fast his games can run on mimimum requirement with good 3d quality. The motion is very fluid. It seems his code is really optimized. No wonder why Quake 3 is now the de facto standard in 3D benchmarks.

Quake 3 is definitly. Look at Medal of Honour that uses the q3 engine. Unreal has been used a lot and is solid (eg. Deus Ex) but not as pretty as Q3. Can't comment on Q4 or Doom 3 as I havn't seen it in use. The Lithtech engine was only really used well in AvP. I personally think though that Medal of Honour is the best game for a while, although running around every corner only to blow someone away, there is nothing better then networking up only to watch your mate leap out of his chair after snipering his head.
But then graphics can be put to really good use if the program writer doesn't rely on the engine, eg. GTA3.

I don't really like the fact that games use other games engine's (as the Quake 3/UT engines are starting to show signs of wear) but I had to vote for Quake beacuse my all time favorite game, American Mcgee's Alice, is based on the Quake 3 engine.:p
P.S. Whatever engine Dues Ex 2 is using looks NICE!:x

Although it aint got all the shiny bells and whistles, im still a great admirer of hl's engine (even if its based on the QUAKE 1!!! source). Its one of the stablest out there and due to it being relativley old runs like schhhit offa stick on nearly all PC's. And it is also by far the easiest i have ever come across for editing.,
Aesthetically though q3 and its various offspring wipes the deck with everything at the moment (especially the visually stunning SOF2), however i must say im awfully impressed by what ive seen of doom 3 and look forward to getting my hands on it :D

At the end of the day it's not the engine, it's the artistic creativity of a game writer. I thing that so much work has to go into creating both that seperate teams designing engine and game are a really good idea. We do pay enough for the games to start with.

You could be the quentin tarantino of game writers, but if your game used the same engine as Castle Wolfenstein (original) you can bet your life next to no one would buy it :(

yeah, just figure, Half Life <etc> is the most played 1st person shooter game on the net, more than all Quake and alikes put together.

You can tell that H-L uses Q1 netcode - even 100 ping feels like molasses with it. I hated playing H-L online.

Thing is bill, due to its older technology, HL is the multiplayer engine for all, no matter what your connection type - your ping will be good - acceptable (unnless you go and play on a server in sodding alaska:rolleyes: ). I remember i used to "try" and play HL when all i had was 33kbps dialup -- and to be fasir it worked.
Unliek q3 and UT, HL is not an engine that punishes the gamer for having a slower connection - for this reason the HL multiplayer engine must be respected - and it is probably down in part to this that it remains as playable today as it was 4 years back (although i must add, vanilla HL MP really does suck  )

i vote for the half-life engine... :) sure, its really old, the graphics are similar to that of quake 2, and all mods more or less look the same...but a 56ker can play and own those on t1 connections! :p :t :p

I think to give a difinitive answer to which is is the "Best" is rather Difficult.
The best eye candy comes from UT engine.
The best performance is the cyro (serious sam)
The best overall is Quake
My favorite remains UT.. :t

What engine was jedi 2 based on, I am playing that right now and it has a nice UT feel to it..

its based on the Quake 3 engine... and BTW the UT engine you are referring to is actually the original Unreal engine... just heavily tweaked, the U2 and UT2003 engines are the original Unreal Engine, just seriously heavily tweaked :D

The best eye candy comes from UT engine.
WTF!!??? Have you played SOF 2, Jedi Knight 2, Quake 3 + TA with all the details maxed out!!
I own all of the above and UT and Deus Ex... and to be fair looks wise - the quake 3 engine in all its incarnation - gives everything else a severe beating...

By the way, it's not the "UT2003", it's codename is Unreal Warfare Engine. The engine was tossed to DE and Legend (From 3d guru Tim Sweeny of Epic no less), Unreal 2 uses the same engine, except it makes UT2003 look blah at times. They each added code and optimzations to the engine.
For example UT2003 looks sweet, basically a lower grade version of U2's graphics:
UT2003:
Limited amount of Pixel Shader work, no vertex shader use.
High Polygon counts (50,000-100,000 per scene)
Fast fps for MP
Limited Karma Physics use
limited Bump Mapping
Particle Shaders
High Res textures (512x512 and 1024x1024)
But when you see below that they going all out for U2's graphics
U2:
Vertex and Pixel shader use
Bump Mapping
Higher Resolution Textures (up to 2048x2048 and later on 4096x4096)
Higher polygon counts (75,000-200,000 per scene)
Advanced Particle shaders that interact dynamically with Shadow Maps, Light sources, and volumetric Lighting.
Full Karma Physics engine

Over 2 years ago Valve rewrote the netcode for hl 1.1.0.0, now it's playable up to 300 ping, I'm on a (very crappy) 56k, and I can play acceptably.
Sadly I don't see Quake/Half-life in that list so I can't give the Q1 engine the credit it deserves for surviving (at least through half-life, which feels a lot like Quake) about 6 years of gaming.
Even The commander keen/duke nukem engine only last 2-3.

The Dark Engine??

Dark engines kinda fallen by the wayside nowadays, its too slow an engine for the big FPS guns to operate on, and as such not many ppl have played games based around it :(, although it is still very good despite its age...
