I have a dual boot win2k/win98se. (1.3ghz duron k7s5a)
here's my problem, the joystick is not recognised in win98se whereas it is in win2k. :(
I've reinstalled the soundcard drivers many times, reinstall win98se as well. But to no avail. Somehow, somewhere I think it's resource is being used. Any thoughts?

Some questions:
-- Is it a USB joystick, or does it plug into a connector on the sound card?
-- If a USB joystick, you need to follow the installation procedure explicitly regarding the order the software and hardware is to be installed. There may be USB patches for certain chipsets (such as Via).
-- If this is USB, and you did not follow the procedure to the letter, then uninstall the software, remove the hardware in Device Manager, and reboot with the joystick NOT connected. Follow the instructions regarding installation.

-- If it connects to the sound card, does W98 recognize the sound card? Do you get sound?
-- Is this a reinstall of the OS? If so, is your board a Via chipset board, and did you (re)install the (latest) Via 4-in-1 drivers?

Hope the above might help figure out what to do next.

Device Manager, and look at the sound card entries, does the game port show up okay (it is usually one of perhaps 4 or 5 "devices" found under the "Sound, Video and Games Controllers" entry).

Assuming the port shows up okay, does the joystick itself have specific drivers that need to be installed?

Can you go into Control Panel... Gaming Options, and "add" a joystick? Have you joystick device drivers disk handy.

Gameport looks great under Device Manager. The joystick does not require any special drivers. It is a simple joystick in which even Windows has an entry for it. It's CH Flightstick. Yes it's old. But it's been working all these while.
