Hi can anyone help me with this

The driver for my mouse being a MS mouse is not loading and when I look in devices it tells me that the device is not working because it can not load the file vmouse.vxd that loads the drivers for the device. It tells me to fix the problem run windows setup again which I have done but did not fix the problem.
I've done a search and I can find the drivers vmm32.vxd and msmouse.vxd and mouse.drv but no vmouse.vxd that it is telling me it can not load so can anyone tell me what I can do from here. Thanks

Do you have COM1 enabled in the BIOS and detected in WIN98?

I don't have vmouse on my sys either - it's WIN98

Thanks Susan,
The computer is my brothers. He brought it to me to install a new modem that they where having problems with doing themselves.
He has had this computer for three years and has not had this problem before.
So when I hooked it all up and booted, the mouse was no more, so I've been on this mouse hunt now for 2 days in between my work.
Can not get in to bios as it is password protected and the battery is soldered to motherboard

Pull the modem.If it has jumpers - set it to com 3 or 4. To get rid of the password you have to clear the cmos.All the boards I have seen w/soldered in batteries have a clear cmos/password jumper next to the battery.Unplug the cables and pop the top. Change/enable the jumper for a minute. Replace/uncover the jumper and boot back up .The bios password should be clear now. Lemme know. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Thanks mr puter
When you say If it has jumpers are you refering to the modem?

Yes. A lot of modems have jumpers that set the com port and the interupt number.Some are p-n-play,with no jumpers. Lemme know. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I've got it booting again to win98 but still no mouse but when I rebooted win98 detected a new mouse I run with it now I have ps/2 compatible mouse port, I've looked in sys prop and it comes up with the same error as the other can't load vmouse.vxd (code 8)

extract vmouse.vxd from the win98 cd using system file checker (sfc.exe)

also check in your system.ini file for these lines.

[boot] section
drivers=mmsystem.dll
mouse.drv=mouse.drv

[386Enh]
mouse=*vmouse, msmouse.vxd

That should do it.. unless a bad mouse.or a resource conflict

Jin you beat me to it-L0L http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I had my reply all set to go when I crashed and had to reboot.

I knew that vmouse.vxd isn't installed with the W98 setup-you have to manually extract it. And supposedly your system needs it.

But why would she be getting that error if it's not part of the original setup? I just recently installed all those "missing drivers" and never got an error before I did.

I've seen the list of those drivers before, but have never needed to extract them. No lock ups, or problems here...

vmm32 emulates those Vxd's that are not there.

Try removing the device from Device
Manager and then running the Add New Hardware Wizard in Control Panel. Dont reboot
before Add New Hardware.

Thank you all for your help
I've got my mouse back
I tried Jin Vitas suggestion extracting vmouse.vxd using system file checker plus the other things he suggested. It did not work so I extracted the system.ini file the same way and I got the mouse back.
Is there any disadvantage doing it this way?
Tommorow at work I will try the modem again and see if there is any conflict and maybe the reason for the mouse problem. Will let you all know

Oh, by the way star watcher she is a he

I hooked the modem up no problem.
I don't know what caused the problem in the first place but at least I have a happy brother again, got the kids of his back,
again thank for your help

So are you saying I did not fix it???? okey dokey....

cal

Well Jin you put me on the right track to fix it. It's just that when I extracted the vmouse file then changed the things you said but the 386enh was not there did not no what to do so I rebooted still no mouse. that is when I extracted the system.ini the same way as you said and rebooted and there it was.
Can you see any problem with doing that.
Thanks for your help

well if it was not there you just add it.. exactly as I typed it.

cal

SO jin
I should have just typed in the system.ini file

[boot] section
drivers=mmsystem.dll
mouse.drv=mouse.drv

[386Enh]
mouse=*vmouse, msmouse.vxd

And that would have done it?

What I did after I read your post. Was look in my puter (as it was my brothers with the problem) at the sys file. It had file icons for 386enh and I did not no how to create one in there. Should I have been looking at the sys file via dos and typed it in there or just type it as you said above in Win

I hope you make sense of what I just wrote
