I am trying to install a new video card for my dad's computer at work. The computer uses NT and I have just installed service pack 6a.

The problem is when I bootup the comp before I see the windows NT screen the comp freezes and the screen has vertical stipes of different colors on it. I can only start the comp in vga mode. Im sure it has something to do with how I'm istalling my drivers so I was wondering if you guys could help me out with some sort of guide to installing a video card on an NT comp.

One more thing, when I first put the card in and NT loaded up, nothing happened. The Add New Hardware Wizard never surfaced. Then I tried installing the drivers that came with the cd and when I rebooted I got and keep gettin the vertical stripe screen.

I would appreciate ne help, I also have mirc if any1 feels like wastin an hour helpin me. thx in advance for any help.

Until someone comes along that is more familiar with NT, maybe this will help. Are you very sure the drivers for the video card are for NT?...and not for Win9x? Windows 9x drivers will not work with NT.

What you are seeing is driver problems I feel sure.

There are no wizards in WinNT. You need to boot up in VGA modes and load ONLY drivers written specifically for WinNT.

You need to delete the driver for the old card before installing the one for the new card.

Yeah I now know that NT is not plug and play and that it has no hardware wizard. The thing is my dad first tried to do it himself without waiting for me and he says that he just popped in the card, turned the comp on and installed the drivers without first uninstalling the old drivers. What I did was uninstalled the vanta drivers and installed standard vga drivers. Then I rebooted and tried to install the vanta drivers again but it didn't work, I still get that same frozen vertical line screen before NT loads. I'm positive that I have the right drivers because I dl'ed them off the nvidia website and they are specifically meant for NT. My dad says that he might just install windows 2k on the comp and use that OS instead. Unless any NT users can help me solve this problem I will probably tell him to do that. Thanks for your replies.

I've this same thing happen on NT when the resolution or refresh is set to high. To fix it you have to load the vga drivers and reset to lower settings.
