i know this is kinda silly Q, but still....Is the Win2k Advanced server Cd's setup.exe similar to setup.exe for Win2k pro.

I am askin this b'caz...while takin the backup of the advanced server cd to a cdr the setup.exe didn't burn right.:(

My original 2k advanced server cd has got lots of scratches on it and as such cannot take the setup.exe file from it and also i did the dumbest thing in the world by doin a Shift+delete  of the hdd backup of advanced server?

So are they both similar?

I don't know what that file is for. In Windows, the setup file is WINNT32.EXE. In DOS, it's WINNT.EXE.

thanx Bill...what i meant was in the root folder of the win2k cd there is a setup.exe file that runs on autoplayin the Cd.

Just wanted to know whether for win2k advanced server and the 2k professional or server cd...do all of them have the same setup.exe file?

I have the setup.exe file for win2k pro will that work for win2k advanced server.?

i know that in dos one uses winnt.exe and in Windows 9x or 2k/nt its winnt32.exe for installin but when i autorunnin the cd it says the setup.exe file is corrupt( and i know it didn't burn properly since its size is shown as 0 KB on the cd).

I have an image file here it would make it clear. (its from my win2k pro backup on hdd)

How i wish i could remove those SHIFT and DELETE keys from my KBD...? Recyclin Bin does help sometimes....

If the files are of the same size, I'd imagine that the Pro file would work. The directory structure is the same on the whole 2K series of CDs.

My point is that it doesn't matter. You don't have to use the file at all to set up Win2K. It's just for that stupid "Welcome to Windows 2000" splash screen.

oh...ok thanx for that bill...will try but i simply can't remember the file size in advance server..will have to check some where else.

or perhaps i will just copy the cd to hdd and then copy setup.exe from the pro backup and try runnin...if it runs great otherwise just have to use winnt32.exe.:t

Win2K Pro Setup = 193KB dated 12/7/99
Win2K Adv Server = 149KB dated 12/7/99

Apparently they are not the same file.

thats bad news, Sterling...think i will better stick with winnt32.exe.

What will likely happen if you use the Setup from Pro is you will get the Win2K Pro splash screen, but when you click browse, upgrade, install or whatever, you will be running Win2K Server/Advanced Server setup files. Look at it as a home page on a web site - it may change, but all of the links still point to the other pages. They haven't changed.

Like I said, the directory structure of all Win2K CDs is the same. That Setup file points to other files like WINNT32.EXE. As long as the file is in the same location, it should work.

That said, the only time that you will be using the file is when you are upgrading another OS or exploring features of it. I never use Setup myself - I boot from the CD or use the 4 floppies.
