I have Windows XP Home edition. Why does it try to connect to the internet every time I try to access the Help & Support Menu?
How can I stop that from happening? Thanks.....

So you need help with Help? Hmm...where's that drop-down?
Try this. Click on Options > Set Search Options. Uncheck Microsoft Knowlege Base.

Guess I Thankyou'd too quick. Help still tries to connect to the internet each time I click on "Help" from the Start menu.
I did uncheck "Microsoft Knowledge Base" in the options menu.

Whelp, I guess you could unplug the modem. I use cable, so I'm not the authority on this.

Why even answer, then?

I've just tried to replicate your problem but can't: when I'm connected (dial-up) I get extra info on the home page and when I'm not I don't.
How is this attempt to connect being brought to your attention? Is it a firewall reporting an attempt to access or is it the OS trying to establish a dial-up connection.
You really shouldn't get shirty with Bill though - have you seen the number of posts he's done????

If you consider that to be an inconvenience, then perhaps you should consider a dedicated phone line for data.

Here, Here! and BipolarBill, Someone with close to 8000 posts shouldn't be slammed with "why even answer then"
good day.

All Win XP Help and IE searches are submited to M$ for whatever reason ( ), The best solution is to get a ----- ----- -------- and ----- as much -- ----- as you can, without disabling your ----------, (although it's not gauranteed to work).
BTW. Bipolarbill has already earned his stripes here at SysOpt, he was just being helpful, as we all try to be.
since I'm no expert either, I edited my post so as I don't get flamed too!

My apologies!! No attempt was ever intended to critise or "put down" BipolarBill. Someone with nearly 8000 posts should be commended. I simply asked:I have Windows XP Home edition. Why does it try to connect to the internet every time I try to access the Help & Support Menu? I got: Try this. Click on Options > Set Search Options. Uncheck Microsoft Knowlege Base Then I responded: Guess I Thankyou'd too quick. Help still tries to connect to the internet each time I click on "Help" from the Start menu.
Now I get: [QUOTE]Whelp, I guess you could unplug the modem. That is sarcasm.
I was simply looking for help. I found the answer, finally, and it was in internet options----- "Never dial my connection"
Did I really need to be "put down" for my inquirery?
This forum is the greatest. Please accept my appoligies. Bill and others have helped my tremendously in the past...... brad

In my defense, unplugging the modem is a genuine option for the desperate and you seemed desperate. Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou!!!! FYI - it was not meant as sarcasm. The next time, however, it will be.

True. I really love the users that have things set up so that their dial-up comes up when they boot into Windows. Recent AOL-refugees, no doubt.
