I have 256Megs and can afford it... or are there any apps to do this? dosmastr 02-08-2001, 04:53 PM dude, thats like shooting yourself in the foot. windows only uses a swap file when it feels it is going to run out of ram, if you ran that setup when it gets down to crunch time windows upps the size of the swap file, which would cause you to run out of ram. like one of those cycles (the more it needs the more it asks for and the deeper a whole it digs itself) with that much ram windows won't be using the swap that much anyway. i have 320MB and i HAVE run with virtual memory disabled at times without any problems. on your system, Windows might bump up the swap file size but its only as a precaution, it probably won't ever USE more then 25MB, it just has the file size bumped up just in case. i have never seen my swap file have more then 10mb in use. if you don't believe me and still want to give it a shot, i know of a couple programs out there, search for ramdrive on google.com it will point you to them. Dosmastr [This message has been edited by dosmastr (edited 02-08-2001).] NDC 02-08-2001, 04:53 PM To be honest with you, I wouldn't recommend using RAMDRIVE.SYS for Swap File because its maximum size is 34mb.....and I doubt you would want multiple RAMDRIVES scattered across your OS.... I'm not sure if this will work with Win ME, but you will need the DEVICEHIGH=C:\RAMDRIVE.SYS 2048 /E in the config sys file and you will also need to load himem.sys and emm386.exe in the config sys to utilize the expanded and extended memory. You must have the ramdrive.sys file on the system and enter the path as shown above.... note Valid values are 4 to 32767 (4K to 34Mb). /E creates the RAM drive in extended memory. /A creates the RAM drive in expanded memory. Example: To create a RAM Drive of 32 Mb (the maximum possible with RamDrive.sys), include the following lines in Config.sys: Device=c:\Windows\Himem.sys = Enables access to extended memory Device=c:\Windows\Emm386.exe = NoEms Provides access to upper memory blocks (UMBs) Dos=High,UMB = Lets Dos load into high memory and manage the UMBs DeviceHigh=c:\Windows\RamDrive.sys 32767 /E = Creates a 32 Mb RAM Drive in extended memory. Steve R Jones 02-09-2001, 03:22 AM I've put my swap file on a ram drive before. It is NOT for the weak at heart. Do not do it on an Office machine and or use priceless programs without backing up first. You can go to the link below for some good info. Not so sure it'll run on ME.
