directx 8.1 help!!!

i downloaded and installed directx 8.1 for my computer. every time i open the directx diagnostics, it stops working. task manager reports it as not responding, and when i do end task, it locks up my computer:mad: . plz help, i want to install the dvd playback on my computer!!!

Hmm... can you provide a full list of IRQ+DMA used by each of your hardwares?

i think you are just having subttle I/O conflicts.

the same thing happened to me.

but after turning off ACPI, everything worked fine, after i manually set specific usage of hardware resources.

did you mean 8.0 or 8.1, big difference here.

can mess his machine even more, if he went back to 8.0 from 8.1

will just tell you, you already have a newer one.

Yikes, as i thought.
If you know how to
Dissable the ACPI in BIOS.
then let windows Redetect everything.

and if you also know how to
select specific IRQ for each device.

example

IRQ 11 for video
IRQ 10 for nic
IRQ 5 for audio
IRQ 3/4 usually used by Com 1 and 2, if you have no need of them you can Also dissable it at the BIOS
IRQ 7 used by Parallel by default, you can also dissable it
IRQ 6 used by FDD (should not be dissabled, unless you have no need for FDD)
IRQ 12 used for PS/2 mouse+keyb
IRQ 14+15 used by IDEs by default, bad idea if you want to dissable them
IRQ 1 is suppose to be Keyboard
IRQ 2 and 9 are shared, and used Taken by ACPI dissabled or not
now the annoying thing

USB will use anything it wants all the time, no matter how you set it.

If you happend to have FireWire, try to hook it up to share IRQ with USB.

that's why i did with mine, since i ran out of every IRQ, and they are working fine.

no it will has no problem with your HDD.
as long as you keep IRQ 14 and 15 for IDE as i said earlier.

that's why i said it'll be a bad idea to dissable 14 and 15

cuz if you do it you'll have dissabled all your HDDs and CDs

my bios sucks, here is what i was able to do:

vga to 5
usb to 11
smbus, audio, and nic to 3 (they were grouped)
modem (not used) to 5

dxdiag loaded!!!:)

but, i have no sound still :( . cant figure it out...
drivers from windows update: no sound

soft paq from compaq: no sound, wont help cuz i took ME off :mad:

drivers from ess: dont work
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!:confused: :confused:

See if you can, move the PCI Cards around inside the box, until you can get the Audio card to be on its own port.

no need for BIOS upgrade, but of course a new one wont hurt.

as i said Try to set up each Device card in 1 slot at a time

until you find the board you want with the IRQ you want.

i took me an hour for me to find a perfect configuration. for my setup.

there are always ways, check with your Manual, or download a .pdf about it. or go to your manufacture website and download the manual.

SMBUS = obsolete

there are no hardware made for that bus.

so feel free to dissable it.
I killed my modem too, no use for it, since at home i use either CABLE or CELL PHONE

Local telco is totally pissed off at me, cuz i'm not using them

if i just disable everything w/ acpi in it in control panel/system/device manager, would i be ok?

I still have no sound. On another win98 comp I have (which also has useless bios), I uninstalled ACPI thru the Control Panel, and it crashed. Is there anything at all I can do to get sound?
