I have two Dell machines at my work, both with 128meg RAM but i am not sure which chipsets they are using.
One machine has a PIII 500 and the other a Celeron2 466 (i think, it has 128k on-die cache). The PIII is a slot-1 with 256K off die cache. (so it is only 1/2 clock speed)
My questions are,
1: Is there alot of performance difference between a 66MHz bus and a 100MHz bus?
2: Should the Celeron be able to keep up with the PIII running Office97 applications (large spreadsheets with lots of calculations)?
3: Is the difference between the PIII and Celeron similar to the difference between the Duron and T-Bird?
Thank you and happy computing!

okay just a correction for ya before i answer the question the p3 has 512 kb off die cache.
1. Yes there is a big performance difference between 66 mhz and 100 mhz bus due to the fact that fsb is one of the most important factors of system performance.
2. no the celeron shouldn't be able to keep up with the p3 in these applications because of the low fsb and l2 cache
3. the difference between the p3 and celeron is not the same as that between the Duron and t-bird. There is way too much of a performance margin between the p3 and the celeron.
hope this helps http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Although there may be a big difference between the older Celeron and PIII, I have found that my new Celeron 2 600 (Cco stepping) overclocked to 900 MHz (100 Mhz fsb)outperforms my PIII 600 @ 744 (124 MHz fsb) by about 15 % in Wintune benchmarks. even more surprising is that the PIII runs the ram at 133 cas2 while the Celeron has the ram running at 100 Mhz cas2. They are both running on MSI-6309 Via 133A motherboards. I have to say that the new Celerons seem like pretty good performance for the cost.

Thanks Jaida, but i have another question.
The Celeron has 128K of L2 running at clockspeed and the PIII has 512K of L2 running at 1/2 clock speed( i know this because i ran the latest WCPUID on both), does that make a difference?
OOps, never mind. with 512 running at even half clock speed that is still better isn't it.
