Need some help on a couple of issues. :p
1) I just set up a new computer and have the Gainward GeForce4 TI 4600. I inserted the disk that came with it and installed the software as well as the NVIDIA drivers that were available (not sure which driver version...I selected the fast VGA driver rather than the WHQL driver....both were NVIDIA however). My computer locked up...once for my wife and then once for me. After it rebooted, a blue screen came up basically telling me that the N4_DISP.DLL file was causing the problem. I then put in the disk and installed the WHQL driver (NVIDIA 27.50 version). No lockups yet...but then again it's only been about 15 minutes. ??Any idea why this would happen??
2) ??Which version of drivers should I have installed??
3) ??Good/Bad to install software that came on disk??
4) ??When I change drivers....what is the best way to do it so I'm not leaving behind any old drivers that may cause a conflict??
Thanks for the advice and troubleshooting. :t

Every system is different and it's impossible to troubleshoot every problem. In this case, you did the right thing by downloading the MS-tested drivers. Windows Hardware Quality Labs knows what's good for you. When changing nVidia drivers, use Add/Remove Programs and then install the new drivers. You can use Detonator Destroyer to remove remnants. Search for it with Google.

Thanks BB (Bipolar Bill) for the quick reply....anyone else that has any info...please provide also. :)
One more question....what is WDM???
Thanks again:t

WDM = Windows Driver Model
These are the drivers that are sometimes included in Windows setup.

Do I need the WDM drivers??? I did notice they showed up in the ADD/REMOVE programs.....and I'm sure they were loaded from the Gainward disk.

I would remove them and install the WHQL driver from nVidia.

Gainward cards are very good, but I would get the newest official drivers from the USA site at www.gainward.com
Detanator destroyer can be found at www.guru3d.com (or .net).
I have loads of problems with the Ti4400 but that was down to Win98SE, SB Live!5.1 and 512Ram, anything sound similar?

Here are my system specs: :r
ASUS P4T533-C
P4 2.26GHZ (533MHz FSB)
512Mb PC-1066 RDRAM
Gainward GeForce4 TI 4600
SoundBlaster Audigy Platiunum EX
80GB WD Hard Drive w/ 8mb buffer (4 partitions...3/10/53/10)
Not sure what would be causing this error to pop up. It happened again this morning......giving a message about the N4_disp.dll file being the cause of the problem. Any idea what this file does...or why it's causing an error message???

Here's exactly what the error message reads:
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.
The problem seems to be caused by the following file: nv4_disp.dll
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
If this is the first time you've seen this error screen, restart your computer. If the screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufactuer for any windows updates you might need.
If the problem continues, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
Technical Information:
STOP: 0x00000050 (DxC2DE4CE0, 0x00000001, 0xBFA61585, 0x00000001)
nv4_disp.dll - Address BFA61585 base at BF9B8000 Date Stamp 3C61d92
I didn't see any areas in the BIOS where I could disable the BIOS Memory such as caching or shadowing. I am not overclocking the CPU or video card. I did update the BIOS to the motherboard...to the latest version. There is an update to the BIOS of the video card, but I haven't updated that yet (not sure how to do that.....help). I am using my 3GB partition as the Windows paging file (no page file on other three partitions including the partition Windows XP Pro is installed on.)
Hope this can help someone help me diagnose the problem I am having.
Thanks People:t

Hi Tincup
My advice, being a gainward Ti4600 owner and having had the same and other video problems in WinXP, is to go into Bios and make sure VIDEO BIOS and VIDEO RAM CACHEING and SHADOWING IS DISABLED, DISABLE FAST WRITES, also TRY SETTING AGP TO 2X NOT 4X (no performance hit noticed, but it can, did for me, allow better compatibility). Either of the drivers from CD will works but try to download the Nvidia Detonator Driver 29.80 from Gainward.com. Run the uninstall in add/remove programs, to remove any current Geforce 4600 driver. Reboot and tell windows to use Standard Graphics (SVGA), then run the newly downloaded driver installation program to set up new driver. I would suggest that you do not install the Gainward Expert tuning tool (mainly for overclocking use), as I found it can cause problems due to on the fly clock changes (buggy programming I quess), much better to use Coolbits registry tweak (as I do), which adds a cool overclocking tab to the Detonator driver properties, which enables manual tweaking of core and memory speeds, ( only usefull if you are interested in overclocking), otherwise just stick with default driver settings.
Good luck, any probs. or need further help or clarification, just ask.
Kind regards
Rob

Thanks Rob.....I'll give it a try. One more question for ya....since you own the same video card I do.....how do you update the Video Card Bios. I see there is an update. :t

You will need to download from Gainward.com the Bios file (VNJ1528P.EXE) , run the file which is self extracting, setting the extract path to A:\VIDBIOS (VERY IMPORTANT: A BOOTABLE / DOS DISK IS REQUIRED). Boot from floppy, at the A:\ promp type cd\vidbios then type flash to update Ti4600 Bios, reboot PC, you can verify the updated bios info in Display Properties. I am assuming you are comfortable with this type of procedure.
