If you do a search on ME on this website, yu will see this quesyion has been raised many times. The typical outcome is this: for most ME has been somewhat less than they expected and has been a big flop. There are many who get the ME and find that their system crashes much more and there are not many "improvements" over Win98SE. They have said that they feel that they threw away their money. Still, some have had no problems but you will find that those people only use their systems for the internet and light gaming. I have Win98SE on my machines and they are rock solid and give no errors. I am also careful on what I download and I keep my sytem clean and updated.

I find that ME is often more stable and offers higher performance if good quality MS HCL certified hardware parts are utilized. If you tend to have generic non-branded hardware, then Win98SE will likely be the better way to go.

You can check out my early review of WinME here at SysOpt:

I just intalled a full version of ME. I was purchasing a full version of Windows so I just went with the newest. I wouldn't upgrade from 98 to ME though - not worth the money there. Usually though, full version OEM copies of ME were the same price if not less than 98SE.
The initial installation was among the cleanest that I have ever had with Windows. I have only had a few programs that were incompatible with ME but I tend to keep them up to date. Most programs just worked - others required patches from the manufacturer.
As for the system restore, turned that off. Also turned off auto update. That helps reclaim the space and clock cycles. I am running a 700 SlotA Athlon right now at 900. No problems with overclocking for me so far.
As RobRich stated, if you have good quality parts on the HCL then I think it will work fine for you.

I am building my system entirely for gamming. I have some choices though. I either go with the P3V4x or overclock the P3Bf to 133mhz. And I still uncertain whether ME or 98SE OS will give the best game performance. I have a ASUS 6800DDR which can withstand the overclock system if I choose to go with it. Please give tips. What combination should I choose?

I hate ME!! I use to like it then it totaly screwed up my computer. So i bought a new harddrive, and got a hold of whistler 2416. And no its not illegeal, i got on the beta tester team. ANd i partitioned my old harddrive into 3 slots. One for whistler, one for another os to be determined, probably 98se, and the third for all programs. and my ibm 60 gig is for data. Whistler is aweseome, besides for games, its kicks ****. I love it, stable and it works great. Microsoft might have gotten something right this time. But don't get me wrong it still has bugs, but yeah its beta what do you want. LOL

So go 98Se. And wait till whistler comes out later this year.

I chose to stay with 98SE.
I was tempted to upgrade just to upgrade, but after much thought I decided to stay wit 98SE, especially since I heard a lot of games do not support it.
I think I'll wait for Win ME 2, http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
