Hello,

I have a Coolermaster DP5-6I31C-A1 HSF and a 1GHz Duron. I used Arctic Silver 3 and I took off the factory compound with some scraping and mineral sprits as directed. Abit KR7A motherboard, case has one intake and one exhaust fan. Power supply has one fan.

Temperatures are..
CPU Idle: 37C
CPU After hours of gaming: 41C

Board Idle: 27C
Board After hours of gaming: I think they were around 29 or so.

Those seem a little high to me, what do you think?

Thank you,

They seem fine. My duron 1.2 Ghz gets about up to 45C sometimes.

No need to worry.

Oh yeah, definately good temps. My Duron runs up to 52° after a load is on it for some time.

You have nothing to worry about with those temps. My Duron 950 runs at about 45-46°C idle and 51-52°C load.

Just another enthusiast chiming in. Those temps are fine for you Duron Jawa. I've oc'ed Duron1GHz@1241 and my cpu's idle temp is 34C and full load is 39C. Am using ASIII with a Volcano 6Cu+.

If you think its a bit high, you could always do a little case modding which is always fun, until you ruin your case of course. ;) Most modders start out with adding a blowhole at the top of the case and another fan on the side panel. Take a look here (http://www.speedy3d.com/case_mod/links.php?cat=3) for some blow hole guides.

Looks like the AS3 is forming quite well.. full load is now 39C for processor. :)

It is possible that I applied too little AS3? I put like a haze on the CPU core and i put it on the heatsink and wiped it off, just like the directions on the AS site.

Also, would adding a 50cfm 60mm Delta fan on my el-cheapo heatsink improve temperatures any?

I just want to improve the temps for fun now. :x

Thanks for the help guys!

btw, sorry for the double post.

ALSO - Is it worth overclocking my Duron? The bios has a selection of processor settings and I can just automatically set it for higher speeds.. eg. set it to Duron 1.1GHz. What kind of extra heat/damage should I be expecting if I do overclock?

To be honest, I'm still not completely sold on whether Arctic Silver is that much better than generic thermal paste, but I gave it a shot since most people have been happy with with them. I mean, we're still only talking about a couple of degrees or so. I wasn't expecting any miracles here like a 10-15 degree drop heh. Anyway, they were locally available for me and its turned out well enough.

Adding a screamer like the delta fan to your cheapo heatsink would help, but the heat is still inside your case. I think you would do well to balance it out with another intake and exhaust fan somewhere. I think more efficient circulation is has a higher priority than just switching fans on your heatsink.

Another thing you could do inside your case to reduce possibly reduce temps is to tie down your loose ide/audio/floppy/power cables. Bundle them together and then try to tie them down out of the way of the airflow from your front intake fan. G'luck!

Oops. I didn't see that ALSO part in your second posting. To answer your question in a round about way, you are in the Overclocking section of Sysopt so there may be some biased answers here.

I know I'd overclock to the highest stable setting I could with my procs. To me, squeezing as much performance out of the processor is a challenge and fun thing to do. Will it destroy your Duron? Depends on how careful you are. Certainly, you are shortening the lifespan of your processor when you overclock, but most people upgrade well before the processor dies. Most of the time, its not an issue. However, you can smoke your processor if you suddenly make a big jump in speed settings. This could have an adverse, immediate effect on the life of the processor and/or system stability.

Depending on how much you push your system, will determine how hot things get. Maybe a 4-5 degree increase in cpu temps if you push your Duron Morgan to 1.2GHz like mine. I dropped my multiplier from 10x to 9x (this requires unlocking the multiplier however) and increased the fsb from 100 to 138. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. I'll definately be looking into rounded cables soon. Those deltas are loud.. I went to sidewinder computers online and they have a setup where you can listen to the fans.. wow.

Should I overclock my 1GHz Duron, and how far should I take it and what should I look out for?

Thank you,
Jawa

Oh, thank you for the overclocking post.. just saw it now. :)

Oh, what can I do without unlocking the processor?

Thanks,

Well you could try raising your Front Side Bus little by little. Actually, it isn't that difficult to unlock a Duron anyway if you use the pencil trick. I haven't done it to my Duron system though but it seems simple enough.

You do not have to unlock the processor just to overclock. Like JuNacy said, you can do it strictly with upping the front side bus little by little. Once you hit a speed where your system is unstable, you can scale back a notch or two to keep it stable. You do not want to freak your system out by making big jumps (say from 100fsb to 133 fsb) if your cpu is only rated for a 100mhz bus.

Okay, if you're still interested in unlocking your Duron. The pencil trick is definitely the easiest way to go. Here is a guide to using the pencil trick (http://www.motherboards.org/articlesd/how-to-guides/41_1.html). I wanted to make it hard on myself  so I used rear window defogger repair kit, which can be bought at a local automotive store. You can do a search on google for a guide or you can message me, but trust me, go with the pencil trick if you decide to unlock your Duron. Good luck!
