Is it possible to overclock my Athlon XP 1800+ on my Asus A7S333 motherboard? If so, how can i do it?

And also, I get a reading of 37C on my CPU in idle and 39C on full load using Thermaltake Dragon Orb. Is this correct?

Thanks!

You have to unlock the AMD CPU. It's not like the Intel processors how you can change it in the bios.

Here is how to unlock the processor. Be sure to download the movie file. Once you unlock the processor there is no turning around.

Good Luck. :)

something is wrong!!
you cant get 39 on full load!!!
what software are you using to find your temps!!

download it here!
http://www.hatman.com/mbm/MBM418.zip

you can overclock but very little you may be able to increase the FSb in the bios ! or using this software!
to overclock get softfsb
get it here

Let me know!

How well does SoftFSB work with Athlon XP's ?

And MBM doesn't work properly on my computer... But I used SpeedFan

It works well..
but you got to remember that AMD XP dont overclok very well and they might just burn if you overclock them too much!!
Just increase the FSb 1 step at a time! AND keep your ye on the temps!

you have to configure MBM!

No, just like an Intel chip an AMD chip can also be changed in the BIOS. The Intel can only be overclocked via FSB, but the AMD Xp can also be overclocked via FSB. So you do not have to unlock an XP to overclock. the only thing unlocking it does it allow you to manipulate the Multiplier, which is alos changed in the BIOS once unlocked. However you can still just overclock with the FSB. Be warned the Xp's are not the best at overclocking.

Also 39C is fine for an XP chip. Why do you say this is wrong Grimf? He may just have good cooling. My thunderbird(1.4 they run hotter than Xp's) runs at 35C at full load. Thats with retail hatsink also, I just have good airflow in my case. So 39C is not impossible.

Good luck:t and take your time. :)

really cause peopel say all the time that AMD XP run at 50-55C when in full load! AND around 45-47 idle!! they overheat all the time and all other ****!
I never knew they ran so cool!

 :)

Well, a lot of people do run that hot, however there is just one thing we dont know and that is the other kind of cooling he has. he may have 5 case fans we a nicely designed airflow going on. So it is possible. You never know:confused:

During the winter months, I actually had my XP1700 running at 35C FULL LOAD no less! You can get an AMD processor to run that cool if you have proper cooling... As far as OCing is concerned... I've had my 1700+ running at 150mhz fsb stable... And it was still running pretty cool too... I probably could have went higher if I had some PC2700 ram instead of my PC2100.

Well actually, if you want to see how my cooling is, check this out...

There's a Sunon fan attached to the bottom of the Power Supply sucking air up and another 3.9W fan on the back of the case also sucking out...

Plus 4 other fans blowing in from the side panel...

p.s. Yeah I know it's kinda cluttered.. I just upgraded this week!

nice heat sink/fan

I think you can overclock a bit!!

For some reason, my computer freezes every now and then, but the temperature is reporting 39C on full load... is it possible that something is broken? I didn't overclock the RAM, but could bad RAM or hot RAM be the problem?

Thanks!

btw.. that temp is alright.. A Volcano7+ can get the CPU cooler tho... I had it at 31-32°C yesterday while at 100% load and overclocked to 1.6GHz
and this is my airflow... Case (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/attachment.php?s=&postid=670345)

[Exaust fan near CPU doesnt work properly.. notrice.. not turning.. PSU has no extra fan to draw heat from CPU]

Your XP won't burn out at those temps. Although, remember that all motherboards are calibrated a little differently temp-wise.

How are you testing the load temp of your computer? An XP isn't going to run at full load even in all games if you're gpu limited.

Keep overclocking that FSB until you lose stability than back of a couple mhz. You should get at least an 100 mhz overclock. :t

On full load, my temp is 48C and in idle mode it's 37C.
