transfer a large group of files from 1 PC to another PC, directly.

old PC has no cd-rw so i'm looking for a method of going from the old PC to the new PC directly, without having to create bunches of floppys.

Like going from harddisk to harddisk would be great.

What is needed to accomplish this - hardware, software, both????

thank you,

If you wanto save money. Just unplug the CDRW from the new computer and plug it into the old one. Setup the burning software, burn the files on CD. Then switch the CD ROM back.

or
Get a network hub and some network cable, setup home network, transfer the files.

or
Get a external USB zip drive and a zip disk, (don't forget install driver). Plug it into old machine, copy files on zip disk, then plug the USB drive to new one, transfer the files from zip disk to new hard drive.

or
Direct cable connection (need to set up)

or
Pull out hard drive of old machine, stick it into new machine, set it as a slave drive, copy the file.

Cheapest way in my opinion is the last option that Lai suggested.

If you take out the hard drive that has the files you want to copy from the old computer, then change the jumpers on the back of it to set it to slave (there will be a diagram on the hard drive of how to set the jumpers to make it a slve), then put it on the middle connector, on the same cable as the hard drive you want to copy to in the new computer, you will be able to access it whilst using th OS on the new computer's own drive.

The computer will boot as normal, because BIOS will be set to IDE-0, meaning that it will boot from the Primary Master drive.

Once the computer is started, just drag files accross from one file on the old HDD to another file on the new HDD.

Hey presto you copied your files.

Good luck :)

you don't need a hub/switch for a home network - just two Network cards (NICs = network interface card) and a crossover lead for about £30 all in. This would be a more permenant solution, but you could try a serial cable (slow) or USB (similary slow but moveable)

just gotta tell you this.

Colleague at work, two sons very brainy and both at uni in final year. Persuade said colleague to buy a new P4 2.ghz.

So he says to me, I want to save all my old data from old machine. Like ten years worth of work.

So I says bring in the old drive, he's useless as far as pc's are concerned, and I'll take it home and burn your data onto some cdrs. And he gets his son to take out the old drive.

But here's the creaser, his total hdd capacity was 540mb and he had only used 350mb and was still running 3.11!!!!

:D

Totally creased me up, still makes me smile, I burned him one cdr and gave him the kit back next day. How much do I owe you he says, nothing says I, the pleasure was all mine. It still makes me smile even now. I got several movie files bigger than that!!!!LOL:D
