The subject line about says it all. I would like to replace my 700MHz Celeron with a PIII. The chipset is the intel 810.

i dont think you can do that, the celerons are slot a processors while the p3's are not, I may be wrong, but I dont think thats going to work

It would help to tell us the motherboard. Also you probably just couldnt buy the CPU, you would probably have to get it through compaq as they are very proprietory(sp) and a normal part may not work in it.

The Intel 810 chipset works for Celeron® and Intel® Pentium® III processors based on .13 micron or .18 micron process technology. So it can be done, if the motheroard supports it. However without knowing your motherboard I can tell you what it can/can't support.

Well, you sure couldn't use a tualatin chip on that. The best you could hope for is a p3 coppermine 1G or 1.1G.

I got that linet one straight from the intel site. yeah, not the newer celeron mabey not even the newer p3. I cant tell without his board.

According to this link, you should be able to run a P2 1G:

ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/supportinformation/techpubs/qrg/presario5bw_rev2_us.pdf

just gotta compare which board you have to the board of higher models, like a 5BW360. :D

p2 1 gig..... intresting...

heheh anyways :), umm i ahev a compac 5100 with a 900 duron... and well i got a 850 t-bird i was goig to put in.... can't, the mobo doesn't reconize it i'm assumung its cause you ahev to go trew com[paq :S

TiGgErDbC- Yes that is probably it. thats why you dont buy from places like them dell, gateway, compaq ect.

Thanks for the link Midknyte, it looks like the motherboard will take up to a 933Mhz PIII @ 133MHz. This would be a great upgrade over the slow Celeron using the 66MHz FSB.

hmm, Actually I didnt think the intel 810 supported a 133 bus. I thought it was just the 66 and 100.

That sounds right. I was thinking you could use a 1G 100x10.

Make sure to check the model number of the motherboard. it should be on a sticker right by the parallel ports, but it might be somewhere else.

Intel says the 810 will support the 133MHz FSB Intel 810E Chipset (http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/810/810e.htm?iid=ipp_browse+chpsts_810edsk&) . So the real question is did Compaq implement all the features of the chipset? It would be great to drop a 1GB PIII @ 133MHz FSB, but evan a 1GB PIII @ 100MHz FSB would be good too. Using the 100MHz FSB I could reuse my ram otherwise I would need to upgrade to PC133.

Ah. Ok.

Good Luck!:D

Will...it looks like it dosn't support the 133MHz FSB as per Anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=952) . Midknyte so you think it might take a 1GHz? The Celoron is 10.5 times 66.66MHz. So will the MB go to at least 10.5x?

Yes I was correct, I did a bit of searching on the net and everywhere I went it only mentioned the 66/100mhz bus

The multiplier is in the cpu, not the motherboard. If there are other models in that series that support a 1G, then yours might too. You might need to update the bios or something.

I would check with compaq tech support first before you go out and buy a cpu. You can even quote from the Quick reference guide (the link i posted earlier).
