Win2k server, active directory, XP clients.
I add a new XP laptop to the domain with a previously used, yet deleted name, from active directory. It adds successfully to the domain, and it able to logon. Yet, the computer account is missing from the list in active directory.
Any ideas?
I removed it, renamed it, then re-added it and all is well. But that original name is hosed now it seems. Does anyone know enough about active directory to fix this?
Thanks.

You cannot do that
you have to create and actual account for each computer, that is linked to a specific user account
if you are not security paranoid, the just created a new account for eacj computer you want to allow on the network.
it doesn't gets created automatically.

Actually, the computer accounts are not in any way, shape, or form associated with the user accounts.
I don't think I explained myself well enough.
ORIGINALLY:
I removed the old laptops' computer account from the domain. I set up the new laptop. Then I named it the same as the old one (our standard naming scheme here). Then I joined it to the domain. It worked and I was able to logon. But the computer name was not in active directory.
TO FIX IT:
I disjoined it from the domain. Then I renamed the computer. Then I rejoined it to the domain under this new name. Now it's in active directory.
What I'm trying to figure out is WHY this happened. Is it an issue with the active directory servers replicating slowly between our remote sites? Or is it some other sort of glitch?
Thanks.
