I have a AMD i gig T-bird chip and my box is constantly freezing up for short periods of time.I hav been recieving help on the networking forum but i have tried everything in the network and Ie 6.0 side nd still no better..,either is my english..lol,so what has been suggestted to me is that I buy a new motherboard with ddr or a newer type memory for that chip and this should help.now I really do want a new motherboard and I may oc but not to sure if I will thought. The box is currently using a ABIT KT7-RAID board(no raid in use) I just read bipolarbill's post about resetting ur cmos and sometimes that will help.I think this board that I have now has to many options in the bios and when i go messing around in thier i cant't seem to get it right For a little history the whole post of these problems look in the networking formum. just recently reformmated and ever snice my machine locks up in ie and other fuctions, like connecting with the lan i have set up, but not only networking problems these are accompanied with freeze up's when mutitasking, which allways makes me think it's a memory problem but I have a stick of 512 crucial in the bloody thing...So I think if I get a new motherboard and new memory my machine will be alot faster..Will it be faster with ddr memory or another type of new memory and board?IS it worth thte 200-300 dollars you will propably spend?
Thanks....:(

Why don't you pick up an ECS K7S5a? You can use DDR later if you like and SDRAM now. It will handle quite a bit more than you have now. It doesn't OC, but you just need to get stable, right? Figure $65 and some time on your part.

Abit kt7a is very good for overclocking and memoery tweaking - however onbly supports SDRAM :(

HI,

i have also heard good things about the ECS K7S5a, thats why i have just ordered one for a customer. If your not wanting to o/c this board is fine, it even (as BipolarBill says) the choice of SDRAM or DDR. The reviews say its a very stable mobo and its only about £50 UK.

Why thanks you very much bill and rob I think that is what I am going to do.I will just buy ddr memory right of the bat,so I can see a big differance in proformance from what I have now.I have been suggested to use the abit kr7a-133 and it will do the same thing my board does now but will support ddr. I dont know just yet if that is what I am going to do or go with the one you siad.Which you like better bill?I play alot,I mean alot of cs(counter-strike) and surf the web among alot of multitasking for a bussiness I own. So that is what the box is used for games and bussiness forms and drawings.Thanks..

PS. I just dl pcmark2002 and here are the results CPU SCORE 2777
memory score 1747
HDD score 565
cpu test 6 0f 6
memory 25 of 25

how are those scores ? DOes that help you any in the matter for why i am having freeze ups?

If you're commited to buying DDR with the board, spend a few more dollars and buy an EPoX EP-8K3A:

http://www.epox.com/html/english/products/motherboard/ep-8k3a.htm

http://direct.mwave.com/mwave/ProdMOTHERBOARD-EPOX.hmx?UID=&CID=&updepts=MB&DNAME=%3Cb%3EMotherboards%3C%2Fb%3E&back=ProdMOTHERBOARD-EPOX.hmx?

or an MSI KT3 Ultra:

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=11&MODEL=MS-6380E

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=559505/blsrt=1/ut=18a04c6a7a7d6b10/

On the other hand, if you need onboard sound and/or LAN, the ECS is fine.

I think it's time for an upgrade, but I also think that your lockups are video-related. They almost always are.

yes I think I commetted to buying and installing DDR memory for the extra money I want big proformance. REally BIll,you think it has to with my video card?I have a GF2gts32 with the new denator drivers is there anything you know of that I can do in the bios to help with this lock-up problem? Is that what your saying is that I have a conflict somewhere's that I haven't found just yet?I want to upgrade but eventully use this board and chip again after I upgrade to a new one. So that's why I am so adimmit about finding out wtf is going on.Thanks for all the advice and direction fellas ....:)

I have found that in 100% of random lockups, there is a video issue behind it. Reverting to older drivers, removing and reinstalling them, upgrading them and replacing the video card all fixed them.

I had the same card as you and my system was locking up. I upgraded drivers and it didn't happen again. I now have the GF4 Ti4400.

If you are *not* overclocking, this is more likely, especially if
it always locks up crashes *even* when doing anything,
including at idle every approximately 30 minutes, have a processor voltage (Vcore) problem of it being too high.

If you have a Soyo SY-K7VTA-B motherboard,
you *must* lower the CPU Vcore select by -0.025V or
flash the BIOS to the latest revision.
I had that symptom, because the processor voltage was too
high, (for a Athlon T-bird 900 mhz) at 1.82V instead of 1.79V.

Also, you *will* be unable to overclock the processor
via the processor multiplier, even when you unlock the processor multiplier with the "pencil trick" when using the old BIOS.

If you attempt to overclock via processor multiplier before flashing
the BIOS to the latest revision, the PC *will* fail to POST and
Voice Doctor will sound the voice through the PC speaker,
"The processor might be damaged or not installed properly" .

Hello Richard,

I finally decided to register on SysOpt :t

Did someone happen to suggest that you check which protocols are installed on your network? For example, if one machine has TCP/IP installed and a second has TCP/IP and NetBEUI installed then you will experience the problems that you have described. Also reset your router back to it's defaults....I know how you like your games.

:D

Yeah they were telling me at work they were having problems once upon a time with some PC's in a certain room that they had installed the net BEUI protocol on... try removing it - might be worth a try... :)
