I am installing xp home on my daughters computer. Xp home is allready installed on my computer. We share internet access through a linksys cable router. What do I I need to install to network the computers? The reason I ask is because I know tcp is operative in xp but the other stuff like netbui is not supported. Is tcp protocol enough? I am installing the os as I type this so I'll be back in a little while and let you know how much trouble I am in.

TCP is fine behind a router. Make sure that you add her account to your PC and vice-versa. Disable the firewall in Properties for Local Area Connection on both units. Use the same workgroup name too. Create some shares and enable folder and file sharing on both. That should do it.

tcp/ip is definitely enough. make sure that both systems are in the same workgroup. you'll have to make identical usernames and passwords on both systems to share resources.

if you are using dhcp through the router, your computers should already be in the same subnet. use ipconfig to find out what your ips are. if you can ping one system from the other, then you're all set. :D

DOH! Bill beat me by a minute.

I am almost afraid to say this, but I think its up and running. Acouple of months ago Bill helped with a problem I had getting 3 computers networked. 1 win 95, 1 win me and 1 xp machines. Couldn't get all machines to see each other. Well now I have 2 xp machines that can see each other, but not the win 95 machine. The win 95 machine can see all 3 machines and my old win xp machine can only see the other win xp machine. Thats pretty much ok for me as I will be dismantling the win 95 machine, althogh it served me well for these past 7 years.
Maybe I'll kep it running just for the heck of it.
Thanks for the help.

I don't know, will he dream? I just don't know.
