I am using a ME cd which came with my Dell to make a new install on a new HDD. Shortly into setup, the A: drive (empty) tries to accessed and I get the message, "Windows Mellinnuium Cannot be installed on this computer". The cd is labeled "for reinstallation of Windows ME". How can I pass this protection?

I had changed the boot to cd, and was booting to cd, and chose "run setup from cd". I also have booted to Win ME boot disk and tried setup. I have even copied files to HDD and still get same message.

I fortunately was one of the few last ones to get 98 on my Dell.

Have you called Dell support, do they have an on-line BBS ?

On an ordinary machine you'd go something like this;

1. Boot to "A" drive, making sure BIOS has the A drive listed as boot location.

2. After a 1 min. load of stuff, you get the option list. Choose start windows with CD rom support.

3. at the DOS prompt, type in fdisk , this prepars the new HD for usage, follow directions and make 1 partition and also make it active.
say yes for large disc support
This will take 3 steps I think.

4. re-boot to set changes made in fdisk

5. at DOS prompt, type
format c: /s
note space between the c: and the /

6. Sserrvaaal minutes later after the format is done it will announce "system files transfered"

7. then type in setup , hit enter and maybe it'll work

you'll get several warnings about losing information, on a new disc there anin't anyting to lose,, so go go go

let us know if it works

I think what's happening is that setup wants some evidence of a pre-existing copy of Windows, like when you install an upgrade. If you have a set of 3.1 or 3.11 install disks, try putting disk #1 in the "A" drive after you boot to DOS. If you have a second CD ROM drive and a Win95 or Win98 install CD, try putting it in the second CD ROM before you run setup.

When you start up the machine and it gets to the POST screen which is black and white, note what it says about,,, "press f1 to enter setup"

Do that and look for a boot option list.

Something like "start or boot from IED 0 or floppy or CD"

choose the CD option, then restart with the Dell CD in the machine.

Hopefully it'll boot from this CD.

We'll guide ya, see if this works first and get back.

The procedure is a bit lengthy to type but we will help you through this..
